Fuck me and my pansy heart.

Soon, she started biting her bottom lip. Her long pointer finger mindlessly tapped mine. So, I asked, “Have another question?”

Gathering courage, she soon nodded.

Even though she was still reserved, not speaking her mind freely, Pops smiled as if a little progress was better than none. “Let me hear it.”

She took a deep breath through her nostrils. “I’m not trying to… compare ‘lights’ but… why are we not racing down a freeway?”

Dagger asked, “Is that what past ‘lights’ normally do?”

Again, she nodded. “If wanting distance from… ‘business’.”

I could practically see wheels turning in Pops’ head as he said, “We’re trying to do the opposite of what’s expected. Hence headed to the coast, on smaller roads, versus hauling ass back to Texas.”

Her fingers squeezed mine as she nervously responded. “I think Lorenzo feels he’s untouchable, so he never felt the need to hide.”

Dag spoke while in deep thought. “Learning a weakness of your enemy is never a bad thing.”

Quite a distance from where we started, we now sat in a Walmart parking lot. Pops said, “Besides what we’re here for, anyone need anything?”

Even though every man in the truck knew Pops didn’t give two fucks if we wanted anything, we all answered, “Nope. All good.” Then waited.

Elle’s tongue sucked on her front teeth.

I chuckled. “Don’t need anything for the road trip?”

She itched her neck as she tried super hard to keep her lips shut.

“Babe, nothing is too much.”

Vice teased, “Nothing? Already forgetting about the yacht issue?”

I laughed. “Okay, correction. Nothing in that Walmart is going to break my bank.”

“I’m fine,” lied Elle.

“Babe!”

She rapidly asked, “Does this store have coloring books? Coloring pencils? Drawing paper?”

Getting out of the truck, Vice waved me off. “Never mind the yacht comment. We’re good.”

While Vice was inside buying burner phones, Pops, Dag, and I were being careful of our surroundings, when Elle asked, “What is it like in one of those stores?”

I was quickly learning, if I had a dime for every time Elle shocked me with something so odd as never having been inside a store most shopped in weekly, I would be a king of silver.

Pops asked, “What kind of stores have you been in?”

“Little boutiques, but only on special occasions. Usually, I am dressed and fitted on one of Lorenzo’s yachts.”

There are many women in the world who would find that to be a luxury dream, but Elle spoke the words as if it were only another cage she experienced daily.

Since I was stunned into silence, and Pops’ wheels were turning again, Dag teased her, “Walmart ain’t no ‘boutique’ so don’t feel like you’re missing out on much.” He attempted to grab my attention, “Lynx, maybe on a date night you can take her in one, in Austin.”

Shaking off my dismay at her sheltered yet tortured life, I smiled. “Anywhere she wants.”

Vice got back in the truck, behind the driver’s seat. After handing Pops a bag, he handed an overstuffed one to Elle. “There ya go!”
