“Too bad that strength only comes with drugs in your veins.”

Hungry eyes locked onto me before he began a slow stalk toward me. “Maybe I need it to help me manage what you put in those veins? Thought about that?”

I hadn’t, hence guilt touched my conscience before I remembered… “Your club sold kids before you ever knew me.”

His feet stopped moving. A touch of his own guilt crossed his face until his eyes glossed over, darker than a second earlier. “Your point?” His stalking commenced.

Backing away from him and around the end of the bed, I slammed my hands to the mattress. “Fight him, damnit! Let my sun be brighter than ever before!”

Appearing confused, Onus stopped moving again, his right eye twitching.

Hopefully, I nodded. “Yes, fight, Onus!”

As if just waking up and starving for coke, Onus shuddered then rushed to his nightstand. Bent down, a long sniff echoed in the room.

Full of so much rage, I stomped my foot on the ground and screamed to my torturer, “Fight this deity with some respect! You fucking coward! Using drugs to take him further from me!”

“Miss me, fallen goddess?”

Chills flowed through me as I sensed the approaching storm I had summoned. “Missing you, Lucifer, is like pretending humans love cockroaches.”

Onus, no longer with me at all, smirked. His hands were held together so his fingers could tap one another as if pleased I just complimented him. “One of my cleverest creations.”

I spit, “Yes, because they refuse to die.”

Lucifer winked. “Unlike your creation?” He gestured to his head then to his body. “He’s not going to live through this—”

I was running across the mattress and soaring through the air before I even knew I was moving. “Free him, flames of terror!”

Lucifer caught me, his expression telling me he was far too pleased that I had lost control of my temper. “Yes, Deity, sizzle for me.”

Now stupidly trapped in his arms which had me suspended over the floor, I smacked his face, and yelled, “Your god was wise to insist on your demise.”

After licking his teeth, his words cut me deeply. “Like Elijah?”

It was true. I had been angry with his god for not realizing how special Elijah was, but now he and I were discovering that destinies were far more complex than what some angels or deities could see.

“Ah,” Lucifer nodded. “My young goddess is starting to learn.”

All fight left me. If I were going to believe, to trust, I had to try to do it at every turn.

Resting my head on Lucifer’s shoulder, I hoped to feel Onus inside somewhere. “Lu, spare the children. Play with me, torture my sun if you must, but set the children free.”

It was no secret in Hell that Lucifer had a special attraction to me, hence why I worried so much for Onus, but at times like this, Lu would let me into his guarded soul.

His head rested on mine, and his voice softened. “Like human’s artificial intelligence, the craving for the young is no longer in my grasp.”

Not believing what I was hearing, I lifted my head to peer into his eyes. “You speak the truth?”

“Unlike you, I can lie.”

I licked drying lips. This was beyond me having faith in the gods around me. “But you are not lying now.”

Seeing fear in the devil’s eyes was like witnessing a lord truly afraid.

I grabbed his face. “Lucifer, please be honest with me.”

He swallowed, staring deep into my eyes that I knew were full of colorful truths… “Humans can no longer see.”
