Oh god, what this girl did to my heart.

I wrapped her up then rocked us both side to side. “As you did me. As you’ve saved me.”

Sable only got a little jumpy when my Harley was driven up the ramp to be in a horse compartment next to her. It was a first for her. My bike fit perfectly and was easy to tie down for transport.

Rya’s suitcases had been packed in her truck since yesterday afternoon. She only had a ‘day’ bag with girl stuff to load, which took no time. I, on the other hand, was quick to realize I didn’t have many possessions to speak of. Loading my one duffle bag, along with Chubs and Roamers one duffle bag each, we were all quiet, lost in our own thoughts.

Rya closed and secured the tailgate of her trailer then said, “Dee-sul, I’m ready.”

Her not saying Mr. had Diesel smiling and bowing his head. “Yes, ma’am.”

No one argued when tiny Rya got in the driver’s seat. It was her truck, her trailer, and she’d been dragging it around for years. Like me, we’d both driven underage.

Me in the front passenger seat, Chubs and Roamer got onto their bikes then took position with other bikes behind us.

Diesel took the lead, then Rya followed him down the driveway. Bikes behind us made it clear this truck and trailer weren’t to be fucked with.

The trip was long, exacerbated by the stress of pulling a trailer. Diesel, as always, was aware and pulled us over at one point for breaks. While everyone was stretching in a McDonald’s parking lot, Diesel lit up a cigarette. “I know we should get some rooms to rest, but I’m preferring we get home. We have enough drivers to push through. Feel me?”

I yawned. “Yep. I’ll drive, but I’ve never towed a trailer before.”

Curling his upper lip, smoke bellowed. “Haven’t you been payin’ attention to your little el driver-o?” He thumbed toward Rya who was checking on Sable.

Laughing and loving that terrible Spanish made me feel closer to the mother I wished I’d met as I grumbled, “Yeah, I was paying attention, old man.”

Rya was impressive. Barely could see over the steering wheel but hadn’t hit a curb. She knew to swing wide at every turn.

Under his breath, he teased, “Did you see that shrimp manhandle the trailer into this spot?”

I smirked. “Fucking hot. I would’ve hit ten cars and ended up all jack-knifed and shit.”

Admiring her, he chuckled, “You’re just like your pops. Wantin’ the hard-to-handle women.”

He patted my shoulder, “Make her sleep.” He turned for the door of the fast-food establishment.

“Anything for my little goddess…”

Being told you are part deity can really put a different spin on an innocent nickname.

“I heard that!” Diesel laughed, walking inside.

With full bellies and Rya’s drooping eyes, I was driving her truck down the freeway an hour later, following Diesel—who promised not to pick any gas stations where I’d embarrass myself when trying to back up the trailer.

After snatching a blanket from the backseat, Rya kicked off her boots. When she went to lay her seat back, she stopped, eyeing my lap.

From across the bench seat, I winked. “You wanna snuggle, baby?”

Rya tried to hide a smile by pushing her tongue against the inside of her cheek. “Maybe.” She looked like a fish caught on a hook, causing me to laugh.

Her lips pursed as her eyes scrutinized me. “What’s so funny?”

“Nothing, sweet thing.” Patting my thigh, I said, “Let’s see whatcha got.”

Only one second passed before she was excitedly crawling over to me, dragging the blanket. Three seconds passed before her head was on my lap and she was snuggled tightly under the blanket.

Her sigh was huge, and the weight of her head increased. With a yawn she quietly shared, “I get to see Demi soon. I wonder how long until we find the twins.”

One of Rya’s omens had promised that a certain child we would find would lead us to Ani’s daughters.
