Trusting this man, I did.

Holding my breath, I found the only communication I would ever have between me and… my mother.

To my baby,

Wincing in shock and breath-stealing agony, I grabbed my chest, positive it was going to explode. “Bors. I hurt.”

His arms tightened around me, and he huddled over me as he spoke into my ear. “Let my voice ground you. Let me holding you give you the strength to read the words she’s saying to you.”

I squeezed his thigh, uncomfortably so, but he took it without one complaint.

“Let her love you, Ivy.” His voice was rich with wisdom and emotion. “Let her have this.”

Bors would never lead me wrong. I had to follow his advice.

Time… I wish I had more of it, but it seems my time is coming to an end. He’s letting me write to you because I will never get to hold you once you are born. The one good thing about this letter is that it gives me hope this journal will someday be yours.

I’m so sorry I don’t have a choice of staying on this earth. Maybe if I didn’t try so hard to find Maeve, I wouldn’t have to leave you alone in a world that is beautiful, yet equally as cruel. But please know, my sweet baby, from Heaven, I will do my best to be with you, give you strength, and help guide you home.

Be strong, my sweet baby. Someday, you will be… found.

Your Ma, who loves you to Heaven and back,

Fiery Tierney

The last words of her only letter to me started to blur as my body began to violently quake. I had a mother. A wonderful one. And now I knew, without a doubt, she was dead.

No longer able to contain myself, I screamed. I howled to the ceiling that I felt was caving in on me.

Jade was crying in the background.

Without questioning, Beth ran from her own bedroom to Jade’s to hold her. That’s when I knew Bors had prepared her for tonight.

All the while, Bors held me and rocked me. “Breathe. Breathe.”

I just kept screaming, now with words, “He fucking killed her! He fucking killed my mother!”

I knew who ‘he’ was.

Stain.

The man who had made my life a living hell before Bors saved me.

Now, Bors had to save me again. From my splintering mind.

It seemed Stain was able to reach me, once more, from his grave.

On his knees, Bors took hold of my face and held it so I saw him. Only him. “You listen to me, Ivana! That hostile tyrant lost in the end! The power isn’t in her death! It’s in her life! Don’t get trapped in the past!”

He was right. Even though I was so happy in the present, I was equally stuck not knowing who brought me into this world. Or how I even came to be.

Bors yelled, “She chose hope! She chose hope, Ivy!”

Stepping stones… I chose hope… I went quiet, captivated by such words.

He growled, “That’s right. That sonofabitch may have snuffed out her last breath but not the light you got from her.” His voice softened. “How your father looked at her is how I look at you.” He placed a hand on my heaving chest. “She’s here. I think she’s always been right here.”

Tears dripped from my calming eyes.
