I rolled my eyes then noticed a woman a few feet away watching me. Her scowl and narrowed stare on me had me mirroring her expression.

“You’re… oh… well I apologize. I’ll… give me an hour and I’ll make some calls. We’ll have the cabinets to you by end of day tomorrow.”

How quaint and what a change in demeanor when I mentioned my newly acquired title.

“That would be perfect but it’s still not good enough. You can call Mr. Omari and explain the timing along with how disrespectful you’ve been to me.”

“Yes, ma’am. Sure thing, Ms. Abraham. I’ll do that.”

I ended the call and the woman stepped closer. “You’re engaged to Ezekiel?”

“I am and who are you?”

She smiled smugly. “Hisfirstwife.”

Sasha.

“Ex-wife,” I clarified. First or not, she was now his past.

“I don’t know what they promised you but whatever it was, I assure you it’s not worth the toxicity of being attached to that family.”

“Happiness…” I stated confidently and her eyes narrowed.

“Excuse me?”

“Happiness. That’s what he promised. He offered you the same, but you refused.”

“You think you know me?”

“No…” I stepped closer. “I don’t have a clue about who or what you are. But I do know what you’renot.”

“Which is?”

“A very smart woman. You had the opportunity to love and be loved by an amazing, kind, giving man and you pissed it all away. I understand though. You can’t help who you love and you unfortunately didn’t love Ezekiel.”

“You think you have this all figured out. That ring you’re wearing is a curse not a blessing. You have no idea of the life you’re marrying into or maybe you do, in an abstract type of way…” Her eyes swept me. “I’ve never seen you before and you don’t fit so that means you’re new to all this. Let me share what my life looked like with you.”

Like I had done seconds ago, she stepped closer and put her hands on her narrow hips. “My family is,was, wealthy with strong traditions. They don’t respect women which means our legacy couldn’t be placed in my hands. My father wanted a son, he and my mother kept trying. When they were unsuccessful, he had another child withanotherwoman—my mother’s sister—but it was another girl. Still, no son. He made a deal with the devil. A very intelligent devil who made sure our family’s legacy would end up in his hands and no longer belong to my family, like he promised.”

“Is that supposed to make me empathetic toward you? Because it doesn’t. Everything you shared is about you and I don’t give a fuck aboutyou. My only concern is the man I’m going to marry.”

“You’re not hearing me. That is the man you’re marrying. Even if his father was the one who made the deal, Ezekiel stood by him and the terms because he is just like him. My family lost everything.”

“Ezekiel is not his father but you wouldn’t know that because you never wanted to know him.”

“No I didn’t, but knowing him never mattered. I was commanded to marry him. That’s how this life works. You might want to think about what you’re signing on for because one day it might be your children being used to get somethingtheirfather wants.”

“That further proves you don’t know a damn thing about him.” I prayed I presented as convincing. She was right. I didn’t have a damn clue how things worked in his life, but I knew Ezekiel. “He would never allow his children to be used as pawns. He isnothis father.”

She smiled smugly again.

“I don’t give a damn about what you believe…”

“Yet you’re trying to convince me to what? Run? Turn against him? Give his ring back?” I arched a brow in challenge. She opened and closed her mouth several times until she settled on what she wanted to say.

“I’m happy. I have the life I want. I’m married to the man I love, have always loved. Consider this a friendly warning. If you have anything of value, get a lawyer and make surethatlawyer has a lawyer. Your future husband is driven by greed and he’s a very intelligent man. Don’t let him steal your family’s legacy too.”

She walked away and I called her name after she only made it a few feet.
