“You’re not wearing perfume.”

“Excuse me?” Those beautiful eyes narrowed on me.

“You smell different.Goodbut different. It’s more you than the perfume you usually wear. Although I like them both, I think this is my preference.”

“You shouldn’t have a preference when it comes to me,” she said evenly.

“I shouldn’t but I do and there’s really not much I can do about it at this point.”

The heat of her gaze washed over me, communicating I was pushing toward a dangerous space for us both so I pulled back.

“Why don’t you get your charging cord and I hang out until you’re safely back inside? I need to be heading home. Busy day tomorrow.” I massaged my jaw, feeling agitated. I didn’t want her safely back inside but the smart thing to do was allow her to get the hell out of my car before I took her home with me.

Her tongue glided over her bottom lip while her eyes met mine. “That’s probably best.”

Something dangerous twisted in my gut which further confirmed I needed to be on my way.

“Good night, Jhorie.” I held her gaze and could see that same dangerous gut twisting happening on the other side of my car. The way her entire body drew me in, called out to me, was irritating because none of this was a good idea.

“Good night, Ezekiel.” She didn’t move, only stared at me. I stared back. Neither of us looked away or said a word but so many things passed between us.

Then the moment ended and she got out. I watched her move to her car, retrieve what she needed, then disappear inside her apartment. I sat for a moment longer then went home, knowing I was only avoiding the inevitable. I would have sex with Jhorie again because it was something we both wanted.

Jhorie.

My night had been counterproductive. After Ezekiel left I spent the next hour debating with myself about all the reasons sex with him again would be a horrible idea. I was insanely attracted to him, but who wouldn’t be?

At first glance, the man was unfairly sexy with his deep chocolate complexion, dark alluring eyes, and subtle edginess. But when you experienced him and realized how intelligent, caring, and business savvy he was? Any woman with a brain and a functioning vagina would find it damn near impossible not to be all in.

I genuinely liked him which meant sex was not an option. Great sex with someone you didn’t see a future with was doable, at least for me. But great sex with a man you could envision your happily ever after with was suicide when you were certain they would never be anything more than amazing sex.

Ezekiel was attracted to me. I could see and feel it with each interaction we had, including our one-night stand with explosive sexual chemistry. I shivered remembering that night. I was fully cognizant of everything about him and what he did to me, which was my issue.

I would have to carefully navigate this situation with Ezekiel. This job was important. With my experience and degree, I could surely obtain another, possibly here in Crescent Falls and surely in other cities, butthisjob was personal. I wanted to do something good for the community that raised me.

Deep down inside I also needed to prove I didn’t need a man to validate me. Dre’thon had managed to slip that thought into my subconscious. No matter how confident and intelligent I was, there was a small, mustard seed sized imperfection that made me question whether he was right and I needed him or someone like him.

After I finished dressing comfortably—similar to the previous day in leggings, a hoodie, and running shoes—I grabbed my keys, cellphone, and clipboard full of questionnaires. I got to the door only to be surprised, once again, by a visitor once I pulled my door open.

He cleared his throat after a long pause with me staring blankly at him. “Looks like I caught you just in time.”

“In time for what?” I stared, waiting.

“You’re doing more door-to-doors today, right?”

“I am.”

“Good, then I caught you just in time. I’d like to tag along.”

He wore black athletic gear—joggers and a matching zip up jacket which was open, exposing a fitted black tee beneath it. His appearance was casual, much like last night. He looked like he was about to go for a run or rob someone. I smiled internally at the thought of Ezekiel robbing someone with his exceedingly sexy, broody vibe.

“I’m sure you have much more important things to do…”And I don’t know if I can handle spending the day with you.

“I don’t. This is a priority. I cleared my schedule, which was not an easy task, so I could spend the day with you talking to the residents.”

“Why?” I asked carefully.
