“I’m good atfeelingthings. It’s one of my many attributes.” His warm, dark gaze held mine, confirming the double innuendo.

“Please don’t do that.”

“I’m not doing anything,” he defended. When I glared, he chuckled so I moved on.

“You were good today.”

“You’ll have to be more specific.”

“You’re good with people. The way you connect with and handle them.”

“I wasn’t performing.”

I met his eyes, not liking the offense flickering in them.

“That’s not what I was insinuating.” He didn’t seem convinced so I added, “At least not in a way that makes you seem misleading. You deal with a lot of people so you have a knack for meeting them where they are, for being relatable. It’s not a bad thing.”

“It’s a business asset.”

“One I hope you have listed at the top of your resume when you’re poaching clients, because again, you’re really good with people.”

He smiled, devilishly handsome, as we approached my door. “I don’t have a resume and I don’t poach clients. That would insinuate I’m dishonest when it comes to the clients I choose to deal with. I’m not. I also don’t seek anyone out. They come to me and I’m selective about who I work with.”

“Ouch…” I grinned. “You took that personally.”

I turned to unlock my door. When I faced him again, his eyes flicked past me and focused on something before landing on me again. “I did. I’m honest in life and business.”

“I apologize.”

“Don’t. I’m used to you misjudging me,” he said with a hint of amusement in his eyes. “I’m learning to look forward to it.”

“I’m sure you are. Well, thank you for today. It wasn’t terrible.”

“Did you assume it would be?”

His eyes moved past me again. He was stalling like he didn’t want to leave and honestly? I didn’t want him to.

“Maybe a little.” I shrugged. “Do you have plans, like somewhere else you need to be?”

He shook his head slowly. “Nowhere important.”

“Would you like to come in? I’m only asking because you seemed really pressed about it yesterday.” I attempted humor to camouflage me wanting him to come in. He let me but I sensed he knew my intent based on the look he gave.

“I wouldn’t say I was pressed. More like curious but I’ll pass for now. Do you have plans for later?”

“Nope, no plans.” I was slightly disappointed that he’d passed on coming in until he offered an alternative.

“Don’t make any. I’d like to take you somewhere tonight but I need to check on a few things first.”

I shouldn’t have been internally celebrating that he wanted to take me somewhere, but I was. “Oh, well just let me know. If nothing changes, I’ll consider letting you take me somewhere.”

Based on the look I received he knew I would do more thanconsiderbut I held firm to my response.

“I’ll call you later, Jhorie.”

“I’ll consider answering.” I shut myself inside my apartment and watched through the peephole as he walked away. I didn’t move until he was in his car then I smiled, rolling my eyes, knowing I was playing with fire.
