While I ordered her drink—a house special, Black Ice—she removed her phone and began recording. First she highlighted the club then leaned in to capture us.

“You’re posting that?”

“I won't if you don’t want me to. I can just post the first one.”

“Post what you want.”

I wasn’t attached to anyone so I didn’t care about being seen with Jhorie. I actually preferred people started connecting us. It made my job of keeping her disassociated from those who might assume they could gain her attention a lot easier.

Her drink came and she made a video of the fruity concoction, which she also posted, then moaned her satisfaction as she sampled it. “This is so good but dangerous. I can barely taste the alcohol.”

“Drink what you want. You’re safe with me.”

“I know.” She glanced my way. “So is he here?”

“He is.”

“Are we going to where he is?”

“You in a hurry?”

“Not really a hurry but the sooner you get that over with, the sooner I can enjoy the evening you promised me.”

“I got you. Let’s go.”

We moved to the elevators near the center of the club and I greeted McCants’s guy. He frowned but nodded before he glanced at Jhorie then back to me. “You going up?”

“Unless you want to call him down here I am.”

He glanced at Jhorie again and stepped aside, pressing the button to open the elevator. We moved inside and she turned to me.

“Is this a bad idea?”

“No, you’ll be fine.”

“Not me, you.” She frowned up at me and I kissed her cheek.

“I’ll be fine.”

The look she delivered proved she wasn’t convinced. When we stepped off the elevator and I located the area where McCants and his harem were seated, she paused. When I started moving, she yanked my hand.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing…” She let go of my hand and looked around but I moved in front of her, blocking her view.

“Something just happened, you want to tell me what?”

“Is that who you’re meeting?” Her eyes moved past me and I assumed she was looking in the direction of McCants.

“Yes, why?”

“I know him.”

I lowered my eyes to hers, asking questions I didn’t have to verbalize.

“Not personally but I’ve been around him before with my ex.”

I should have asked before now, which was my slip. “What exactly is it that your ex does, Jhorie?”
