Sarah nodded against him, her tears spilling along his skin.

Then Kael turned to her, shuffling his body around to go on his knees. He stared at her deeply in a way that was intimidating but fiercely loving.

“Sarah, I didn’t think I would ever feel anything for anyone again. I haven’t been with anyone since Petal. As you might have guessed now, that woman who stopped by the house the other day was no one to me. I haven’t had the interest, sexually or romantically, though I think she was hopeful. But then you came along …”

He trailed off, gazing down at her naked form. The blanket had fallen again, curling around her waist like a hula skirt, the rest of her bare and sensitive to the elements.

“… And, out of nowhere, you knocked me off my feet. I didn’t want it to be true because I thought I was betraying Petal. But I have felt her in the wind, in the moon and stars. She doesn’t want me to be lost. I know it now.”

Sarah knew when a man was lying as much as any woman with enough dating experience did. Kael wasn’t. He was a noble man whose virtues overrode any kind of carnal yearning. Kneeling before her wasn’t a man of deception.

The wind rushed over her skin, her nipples prickling against the chill. She needed him to be closer, more than anything she’d ever needed in the world.

“Come here,” she murmured.

She pulled him by his neck until he was on top of her. She parted her legs, struggling with the blanket that caped her aching need, then wrapped them around the Captain’s waist. They kissed, her fingers tangled in his hair, a wild passion unleashed. Sarah felt his cock hardening once more, the shaft rubbing against her mound.

She moaned as friction grew. Something happened between them which was ethereal rather than strictly of the flesh that ground against the other. He had told her his truth, and she had told him hers. Never had there been a time in Sarah’s life when a man heard her and continued to desire her with a growing, ineffable fervency.

“I want you,” she breathed into his ear, slipping in a nibble. “I want you over and over again. Kael, please.”

He granted her that wish, gliding his cock into her smooth pussy. He was bigger than anyone she’d ever had, but she adored the feeling. They made slow and methodical love, entangled in each other’s arms as time stood still.

NINETEEN

KAEL

Kael was glowing as much as a stoic and previously unemotive Drakonian like him could be. He could feel it within himself, reverberating like burning stars pulsating.

Sarah had given him more than a good reason to forget about all of the bullshit pertaining to any potential corruption embedded within the King’s army. He had a good intuitive notion as to what was going on and who was likely behind it, so he just let it be, hoping that in its own time, it would fade like a gaping, hideous wound.

Except it really didn’t fade at all.

The day following their magical trip to the hillside, Kael and Sarah returned back to his estate and resumed their duties. There was a spark between them, something that hovered invisibly but, nevertheless, present and altogether cosmic.

Suki seemed to love Sarah just as much as she loved her. It hurt his heart to think that Petal wasn’t there to see her daughter thrive, but even Drakonians had their life-after-death concepts and theories. He wondered if the same intuitive energy he was feeling from Petal’s spirit that was encouraging him forward with Sarah was also watching over their daughter, marveling at the beauty of her healing.

The day was going well. The weather was a calm and easy Drakonian spring with teal dew glassing over the garden at dawn. Sarah had given Suki breakfast, and Kael was heading out to the military office to make his way through some tasks required of him. He lingered at the door of the main floor while Sarah passed, taking her by the wrist as Suki scurried upstairs.

“Wait one moment, sweetheart,” he whispered.

Sarah snickered, her hair radiant in the morning light. She took a glance over her shoulder to make sure Suki had disappeared onto the second floor before letting her muscles go slack.

“I don’t know if she’ll want to see us like this,” she said.

Kael pulled her into him. All the fog of trepidation disappeared as she stared up at him expectantly.

“Just one kiss,” he muttered.

Sarah smiled against his lips as they brushed up against one another. His arms swathed around her waist while hers looped around his neck, and he felt her sink into him. Their mouths remained closed for the entire duration, but she still managed to take his breath away. Her peachy taste was like a ripe fruit fresh out of the basket.

“Mmm,” she moaned.

It was dangerous to linger too long, so Kael dropped his hands from her hourglass figure.

“I should go,” he whispered.

Sarah was biting her lip, a tender blush prickling her cheeks. She looked longingly at him, and he swore he saw something flicker in her eyes.
