The chef nodded, his gaze lowering back to the food he was preparing. When Kael spun on one foot to leave, Sarah made a mistake by touching his wrist.

His eyes scorched her like wildfire as he looked down.

“What about your daughter?” she reiterated.

He slid his teeth back and forth, grinding them. Sarah was no longer nervous and was starting to feel a bit irked.

“You will tend to Suki when it is scheduled,” he huffed. “Did you not read your notice?”

Sarah scoffed, then crossed her arms. The chef appeared like he was going to have a mental breakdown.

“A notice? Like I’m being summoned?”

He narrowed his eyes at her. He placed his hands behind his back, his chest sticking out, looking larger and broader than ever. It was hard being annoyed at him when he looked so damn delicious.

“When you arrived, there was a notice placed in your room. It is on the tablet, along with the schedule. You should have read it by now.”

The silence was thick and loud. Sarah felt like tapping a foot at him, but she figured he wouldn’t understand her annoyance.

He once again waited a while without a response. She wondered if that was a Drakonian thing, to not feel any awkwardness at all.

“Well, I wasn’t told about it, and I guess I didn’t see it,” Sarah said, pressing her arms firmly under her breasts. “I don’t think you have paper here on this planet, do you?”

His scowl intensified. “Paper?”

She shook her head, scoffing again. The chef looked like he was about to have a heart attack.

“Don’t worry about it. So, do you need me to look at that first before I tend to my duties?”

“Yes,” he said through gritted teeth. “You will meet her after.”

Sarah’s heart dropped, and she looked away, tears rising in her eyes. She really wished someone had given her the lowdown on the planet so she wouldn’t keep feeling like a fool.

“That’s fine. I will head back then.”

Sarah left the kitchen, feeling his eyes on her. The hallways continued to sparkle in that silvery luster like it was mocking her.

She went into the room, wanting to slam the door, then realized that it wasn’t physically possible. It slowly closed with a hum, and when she was alone, she sat on the bed, her face falling into her hands.

“Fucking hell,” she muttered.

The message on the glass was no longer there. She was able to look out over the landscape which was a mix of a sandy desert plain and a lush riviera. The colors were off compared to what she recognized on Earth, far away and blurring from where her bedroom sat. She desperately wanted a new life, to explore something, to find adventure in the unknown.

She didn’t want Kael to stand in the way. The way he looked at her was like she was scum that he had to deal with. She wasn’t going to take that disrespect. She wasn’t just some random human thrown into his world. She was hired for the job, and she was going to do it well.

With a mutual regard for one another.

She found the notice, which was a strict and regimented schedule, and sighed. This was not the adventure she had hoped for.

FIVE

SARAH

Sarah stormed down the hallway, resolute. The walls still felt like they were watching her, but this time, it was more with adoration rather than pity. When she got to the kitchen, the chef was once more startled by her presence.

“Miss?” he said with trepidation.

“Where is he?” she demanded.
