I stand up on my tip-toes and plant a kiss on his lips, and Lo’zar returns it eagerly. Soon he’s assaulting my mouth with such ferocity that I have to hold onto one of his tusks. Eventually, he pulls away.We should figure out where we are.

I nod in agreement. I don’t know where we go next, but at least we’re alive and safe, and I never have to see the inside of that dark pit ever again.

Chapter14

Lo’zar

We’re free.

I’m not sure where we are, but we made it out of that damn pyramid alive, though not without some casualties. And somehow, we’re back in the jungle, almost as if by magic.

Magic. I wonder if Rimi is right. Those glowing worms, the moving stone... None of it makes rational sense. Something about that place was beyond this world. And that instinct I had that led us downward, that got us out safely?

I don’t know, but I can’t help feeling it was much greater than us, like we are simply two cogs in an ancient machine. Surely Rimi is right, and we found something out of legend down there.

Lo’zar?Rimi asks, searching my face. Can you still hear me?

I nod quickly.Yes. I was just thinking about...We don’t have time for this right now.It doesn’t matter. We should get moving.I try to get a sense of where the sun is, but it’s hard to make out through the dense jungle.

There. It’s getting low in the sky—must be afternoon. That’s west, I say, pointing off through the trees.Let’s go that way for a while and see what happens.

She thinks this through, then nods in agreement. Let’s get oriented around something familiar and go from there.

All right,she says.At least then we’ll have a heading.

I don’t know what comes next once we find it, but I do know that together Rimi and I can come up with a plan. We’ll need to be quick about it, though, with all the supplies back at the wagon where we left it.

We walk through the jungle for what feels like hours as the sun creeps lower. Maybe I was wrong. What if the tunnel brought us out somewhere totally different than where we went in?

What are you thinking about?Rimi asks, reaching out to take my hand. She’s watching my face carefully. Always alert, always studying. My crafty human.

What that place was. What happened there. She turns away in embarrassment, and I let out a guffaw. That, too.

It was uncanny, right?she says.I’m not the only one who thought it was incredibly odd?

Nothing about that entire experience was normal,I say.Except the part where I fucked you twice.

The pink in her face turns bright red. That’s so crass! She pretends to look offended, but under it she’s grinning.

What else would you call it?I ask, enjoying myself as I watch her grow more and more flustered.

I can’t believe we destroyed an ancient pyramid, she finally says. What have we done?

We got out alive, I say, squeezing her tiny fingers in my palm. And that’s what matters.

* * *

The road appears out of nowhere. One moment we’re walking through trees, and the next the jungle’s given way.

I search up and down the road, hoping I’ll recognize where we are.The way is clear,I tell her.

Which direction?Rimi asks, peering around me.

I try to remember what the map looked like for those few moments I saw it. The road wound its way to the northwest, so if we had to walk that far to get here, we must be towards the south. I try to calculate this in my head.

That way is the city,I say, pointing to the left. Then I gesture right. That way is the wagon.

Well, we should definitely get back to the wagon. That’s where all your stuff is, right? We need food.
