Jason swung at me again, and I managed to dodge him. Frustration welled within me. I knew that this would be rough, but he had completely lost his shit.

“You left her!” he roared, flying at me again with first raised. “You screwed her and just left her like she didn’t matter! Left her to raise Henry all by herself!”

“I’m sorry!” I shouted, side-stepping him so he missed me again. “I was an idiot. A kid! I know I did a really shitty thing leaving her like that, but I panicked and didn’t know what else to do…but I didn’t know she was pregnant! I’d have come back had I known!”

“Is that the only reason? Not for Sam?! In seven years, you never came back to see the mess you made of everything. Do you know what life has been like for her? Do you even care?”

“Of course I care!” I insisted, knocking his hands out of the way so I could square up to him. “I didn’t sleep with her because I didn’t care about her.”

Jason scoffed, but he stopped swinging. His glare was still murderous, and his chest was heaving. He was so filled with rage that he was about to burst.

“Don’t give me that bullshit,” he hissed. “You can’t disappear from my sister’s life and tell me you actually care about her. You don’t care about anyone but yourself. Not me, and definitely not Sam.”

“Just let me explain…”

“No!” he snapped, shaking his head. “There’s nothing to explain. I don’t want to hear any of your excuses. We’re done, Ryan. You hear me? Done!”

That shook me. I’d expected rage, but not that he would end our friendship entirely.

“Just hold on,” I said in a firm voice. “Let’s just take a beat, okay? You’re furious, and I get it. I don’t blame you. I know I deserve it, but don’t do anything you’ll regret later.”

He bared his teeth at me like an angry dog. “You’d know all about that, wouldn’t you? A bit hypocritical, really. You make a mistake and you just bail, but now, you expect me to stick around? No. No, that’s not happening. I’m gone, Ryan. You stay away from me, Sam, and Henry. I’ll make you regret it otherwise.”

I stared at him, stunned, but before I could say anything in response, Jason turned and marched out of the room. For a moment, I considered chasing after him but then thought better of it. He needed time to cool off. We both did.

In the morning, he would be in a more reasonable state of mind, and we’d be able to talk. Then, I’d figure out once and for all if little Henry was mine.

Chapter six

Samantha

Moonlightstreamedoverus, illuminating the sinewy muscles beneath Ryan’s skin. He was magnificent as he moved over me. I clung to him and arched my back as he drove into me again and again. I moaned, my head thrashing along the mossy ground. It felt so incredible to have his body pressed tight to mine.

“Sam,” he murmured into my ear. “You’re so perfect. You were made for me.”

His words were nearly as stimulating as his flexing hips, and I purred in approval. He was going to make me come like this. Make me fall apart in his arms all over again.

Wait…again?

I frowned, confused.

What was happening? When had Ryan and I…?

This wasn’t our first night together, was it?

No, that had been the night of my birthday, seven years ago.

“Don’t get distracted,” Ryan gently ordered me, pulling me from my wandering thoughts. He was looking down at me, grinning softly. “Focus on me, baby. Only me.”

As if to emphasize his point, he flexed his hips, touching me deep inside. I cried out, right on the verge.

“Come for me, Sam,” he rumbled. “Come for me, now.”

His words pushed me over the edge, sending me careening into my release. I shrieked and clawed at him, my nails sinking into his back. He released a guttural roar, and I felt it as he emptied himself deep within me.

My body hummed with satisfaction, but my mind remained confused. Something weird was going on. I was supposed to be angry at Ryan, wasn’t I? Yet, for some reason, I couldn’t remember why that was.

“Ryan, what’s going on?”
