For him, anyway.

“A little scuffle. Apparently, our jumper has a brother. Neil and I were a bit busy for a few minutes.”

“Come inside. I may have enough stuff here to clean you up. I always keep a first aid kit in my Jeep.” She sat the cat on the ground. He darted back inside.

Murdoch just let his woman take care of him. He borrowed her shower—he had a bag of clean clothes in his Tahoe. He was going to have to get his own SUV from Anthony’s place eventually. The Tahoe was about to be Neil’s, after all.

He’d worry about that later. Right now…he was a bit sore. And it might last a day or two.

Damn it.

He’d intended to seduce Zoey Sofia tonight.

That had been hisplan. He’d been looking forward to it.

By the time he finished his shower, he was exhausted. He settled on her bed right next to her, with all her little files spread out around them.

And that was really the last thing he remembered.

There wasa man sound asleep in her bed. And Zoey didn’t know what to do about him. His lip was busted, he might end up with a black eye. He’d been punched a few times, he’d said. But he was relatively in one piece. The lawman’s life.

She was far too intimately familiar withthat.

She studied him for a few moments, as she stacked her files neatly in the corner of the room. All that was left in the room now was her bed. She’d even rolled up the rug and loaded it into her Jeep her last trip.

She wouldn’t be coming back to Garrity too many more times.

Murdoch shifted, drawing her eye again. He wore only black basketball shorts and a white tank top. It delineated his toned chest. She wanted to touch him. It was a bit hard to resist. Finally, she lost.

She ran one finger over his arm, just feeling his warmth. She had no idea what she was going to do with him at all. The thought of not seeing what could happen between them had her breath catching.

A rush of panic took hold.

She wasn’treadyto say goodbye.

To Garrity…or to him.

Maybe she would never be able to say goodbye tohim?

Zoey didn’t know. But she knew one thing.

If she stayed right where she was, she’d be making a decision for that next step. And she didn’t think that was something she was quite ready for.

She slipped from the bed, as quietly as possible.

And left him right where he was.

She’d sleep in Pen’s old bed tonight. Just…until she was less afraid of what that man represented.

It felt like the onlysafeoption.

Murdoch woketo the sound of a cell phone and a meow.

The cat that wasn’t his had slept wrapped around his head most of the night.
