Page 12 of Hearing her Cries

In the people she loved now.

But just whoSydneywas now—well, at twenty-two, she was still trying to figure that out.

She’d gotten involved with the small exclusive private investigation firm because her family had been on theotherside of the whole find-the-birth-family drama several years ago. Her oldest sister had been stolen from them when Carrie had been nine. Sydney hadn’t even known Carrie existed until Sydney had been almost sixteen.

That had shaped Sydney. Just like when her best friend Grace had told her the story of Grace’s own father. Grace’s mother had taken Grace and her two older sisters from him. It had taken him fifteen years to get them back.

But if Grace’s aunt Gretchen, who had started Blessed Reunions to help find her own nieces before Grace had been found, didn’t stop trying to seduce Sydney’s father, Gretchen and Sydney were going to have totalk.

Gretchen needed to stoptryingto seduce Sydney’s father and justget on with it already.

Sydney wanted the people she loved happy.

Eventually, she’d find her own way back to happy, too.

She was smiling as she thought about how to help Gretchen figure things out, when the door to Blessed Reunions—operating out of Sydney’s father’s garage after Melody had taken over and moved the investigation agency to Finley Creek around three years ago—pushed open.

It still took a double take to make sure the beautiful woman standing there wasn’t…well…photoshopped, or something. If that was possible on a living being, anyway.

Zoey had that whole sexy earth goddess thing going for her.

Pointing that out just irritated Zoey, though.

Sydney reserved that for special occasions.

Sydney looked down at her own rather impressive chest that she’d received back in April as a surprise after the dumbest mistake of her life and fought envy. A little smaller up top would have been a lot more manageable in life.

Sydney hadbreasts, most definitely. Far more than Zoey—just her luck.

Those things tended to get in the way sometimes.

Like…when she was trying to see her own feet.

Sydney was tall—she and Zoey were both five eight or so, but Sydney had about thirty-five pounds on Zoey, now. Even after losing a good fifteen or so herself back in May.

None of her weight loss had been in her boobs either, darn the luck.

Zoey was one of thekindestpeople Sydney had ever met. Zoey had been there for Sydney at the worst possible moment of her adult life back in May. She had helped Sydney every step of the way—and then held her when she cried as her heart, her dreams, broke.

That was something that would always have Sydney’s loyalty.

“So, boss, what can I do for you today? And can you help this almost-virgin girl here give pointers to one Gretchen Reynolds on how—and apparently where—to properly seduce a man so said almost-virgin girl does not walk in on her own father almost getting lucky…once again?”

“Seriously?Again?”

“Yep. Found them on the couch this time. If I had just been half an hour later, but nope. Walked right in during the middle of it. Then Gretchen ran like a scared little rabbit. Dad just sat there, this confused look on his face. I am starting to think the man doesn’t know what happens next with a woman. I’m not sure where my sisters and I came from, Zo. I’m pretty certain he’s relatively innocent.”

“Sure he is. Sure he is.”

“You’ve found something. I see it in those beady brown eyes.” Gorgeous brown eyes Zoey shared with her baby sister—Sydney’s bestie. Sydney’s bestie who was having some anxiety struggles right now, thanks to a stupid-ass ex-boyfriend who had made some comments about Pen’sweight. Pen, at five ten, didn’t even hit one-fifty and had no boobs at all. The guy had complained about Pen’s lack ofboobs. Not like Pen complained about his lack of appropriate genitalia size, or anything. She probably shouldhave, from what Pen had described after she’d given the jerk her virginity. Asshole.

“I found a birth certificate. No clue how authentic. But she’d kept it in a photo album with…these.”

Zoey spread a bunch of photos and clippings on the counter.

Sydney whistled through her teeth. “Wow. It’s a Zo in retro-wear. You should so figure out how to wave your hair and dress like the ancestress on Halloween. This is wicked. She’s gorgeous—just like you.”

“Here’s this guy here, too.”
