What in the hell?

His blood chilled as possibilities ran through his head fast. What exactly was going on here?

Murdoch paused where he was, behind the old garden shed. As he tried to figure out what to do next. He was getting inside that carriage house. Somehow. He tucked nurse Bonnie’s ID into his pocket. She was either involved in this mess—or another victim. Either way, he added finding that woman to his list of little to-dos.

There were lights in the windows. On multiple floors. There could be dozens of people inside this building right now.

Including Zoey Sofia.

That was all the incentive Murdoch needed.

Things were not going accordingtoplan.

And it was mostly Vaughn’s fault for going on his own volition. Gregory hadn’t needed that other girl, damn it. He’d just paid those fools for bringing her because he hadn’t had time to deal with them tonight. And for their silence and loyalty.

But nowthis.

Gregory fought the rage. The impotence. "Oakley did what?"

"Says she called the cops. Not sure if I believe her, but I’m not sticking around to find out. And the damned nanny's dead. She was threatening to spill everything. Name names. So I shot her. We need to get out of here. Leave the bitches and let's go."

"My work. I can't just leave it." Just the mere thought had his heart racing, and his throat closing. Panic threatening. No. He hadn’t counted on this.“It iseverything.”

He’d thought Oakley understood how important her contribution would be. How important the experiment was. But she had destroyed it. How could she have done that to him?

Why were Denita’s daughters being so damned willfultonight?

Didn’t they understand what they had to sacrifice? Their lives meantnothing. They were born to help fix humanity, and nothing more.

That was why he had created all of them.

All of them. Every one of them since the Alvaro twins, except that Avery girl. She had been Denita’s act of defiance.

But the others… they hadallbeen created for him touseas he needed. As he saw fit. And nothing more.

How dare they destroy that?

It was for the good ofmankind. Denita’s daughters were supposed to be perfect. And tounderstand.

But they just kept fightingwhat he had planned for them.

Damn them all.

"You don't have a choice, Greg. You have to do this. Just put the girls you want in your trunk and get them out of here. Start someplace else. I know you have connections to do that,” Vaughn said. He was angry. Impatient. No wonder.

If they were caught here, if Oakley had called the authorities…Vaughn would lose almost as much as Gregory, after all. Maybe more. He had disposed of so many young women for Gregory.

Gregory paused. As he considered. Technically, Vaughn hadkilledfor him many times. He did not want the boy to pay the price for Gregory’s work as well. He had to protect the boy. His…son. In every way but biological.

Take the donor and surrogatewithhim. It was possible.

It might be his only option. He had the perfect donor. He had a more than adequate surrogate, despite the girl’s personal connections. He even had other labs set up around the state. In even more rural areas than Coleson Hollow.

And Gregory had what mattered most—his Bonita.

But how to make this small detour work?
