A madness she knew she would never forget.

As he looked at the mostinnocentone of them all.

Sydney's feet were moving before she even realized it. Her fingers tangled in the dark hair hanging down Pen's back.

So long, so damnedblue.Pen would always stand out with that blue. It was her way of hiding in plain sight. Sydney had seen the blood on Pen.

It was probably Gracie’s or Jo-Jo's. Their best friends.

They were probably all dead now.

How could anyone have survived that massacre today?

She had probably lost two of her closest friends.

Three.

Gerard…she had loved him, too.

She wasn't going to lose Pen now.

Zoey wasn't going to lose her sister tonight. Andnothingwas happening to that baby girl in Pen’s arm. Nothing more than already had.

Sydney wasn't going to let it happen.

Enough was enough.

Far too many people she loved had been hurt so much lately.

When would the pain ever end?

Sydney’s hands were reaching.

Her eyes met Pen's. Met that little girl's. The little girl looked more like Zoey than she did Pen.

But so small, so young, so damnedinnocent.

Why was it always theinnocentthat were hurt the most?

Sydney used her right hand and pulled Pen closer.

Out of the way. As much as she could get her.

Pen was curled around that little girl. The little girl who just had to be Pen's baby sister. Kept captive of the madman.

Sydney was bigger, heavier, stronger, than Pen, by far.

Pen was so skinny.

So skinny it was easy for Sydney to wrap herself around the younger woman.

She used her left arm to shelter Pen. Her palm wrapped over the baby girl's head, her ear, just trying to protect as best as she could.

Zoey knewshe was going to be too late the instant she fired.

She couldn't see through the smoke. The garage was going to be a smoke-filled death trap very soon. Smoke was coming in from both the side doors—it had to be burning the basement now.
