Page 88 of Hearing her Cries

Daniels probably wouldn’t give her squat. And she knew that.

But there were old records at FCGH.

She had someaccessto FCGH.Through the crankiest brother she possessed.

Still, a stop by FCGH netted her exactly what she needed.

Well, after a phone call to a certain brother-in-law with a lot of power behind him. He promised to send the first warrant to Rafe’s office at the hospital. And the second to the Garrity TSP, first thing in the morning. Marc came in so handy sometimes.

Zoey would spend the night in Garrity tonight. Tomorrow, she was getting in that locked door at the clinic. Finally. Things had just kept conspiring to keep her out of there. But now, she was getting in there.

Rafe was going to check with hospital records, to see if anything significant came up with Dee Davis. No one was saying definitively that Dee Davis and Denise Daviess were the same woman. But with a bit more information about the woman—she had Grace ferreting out everything she could find on possible Dee Davis matches—she might just be able to get a warrant to subpoena the records.

At least for Zoe Sophia Davis. To confirm Zoe Sophia Davis and Zoey Sofia Daviess were one and the same person.

She might not evenbeZoey Sofia Daviess. That was something to consider.

She left the hospital, after thanking her brother and promising him four hours of babysitting duty on Saturday so he could take Jillian out for a nice dinner for all the help he’d given her.

Then it was Garrity. And Murdoch Lake. He was still in charge in Garrity for now.

They were going to work together again.

The last man she would haveeverimagined taking her clothes off for.

The last man she had taken part of her clothes off for already.

If she spent the night in Garrity again, there was a high likelihood her clothes were coming off the fast way. All of them.

That was something she needed to seriously consider. Before she made a decision that could change her life right now. The entire drive was consumed with thoughts ofhim, and not what she should have been thinking about at all.

Murdoch had a way of distracting her. Even now.

The man was driving her insane.

Zoey turned on her turn signal. There was a dark blue van behind her, following a bit too closely on her bumper. She checked it automatically when he sped by. No cartoon bug on the side. Not the van she had been watching for.

She pulled in to the sheriff’s office parking lot.

And there he was.

Murdoch Michael Lake. In the flesh. Looking like every woman’s fantasy right there in the Texas sun.

Well, well, well. Here the love of his life was again. He loved it when she just showed up like this. Made his day.

Murdoch recognized the white Jeep the instant it pulled in. He closed the door of his SUV. He’d been on his way out for the day—a man had a lot to pack, after all. But now he was ready to follow around after her in an instant. Like always.

And if he was a good boy, maybe he could get that little bitty red T-shirt off her again later. “Hey, gorgeous woman of my dreams. I spent all day yesterday on your quest. I’ll catch you up later. What are you doing here in our former home? Shouldn’t you be at the new place, ironing my sheets and cooking my dinner? I’m on my way to you now, you know.”

“Where do you get your lines?”

“I bank them up. Seriously, what’s shakin’, gorgeous cop bacon?”

She rolled her eyes at him, like he’d known she would. “I’m getting a warrant for the clinic. Should be here tonight or tomorrow. I thought I’d stop by—and see if you wanted to do the honors of kicking it in for me? Or picking it? You are so much better at that side of things. I think you were probably a master burglar in a former life.”

“It’s because I have bigger feet, babe.” He checked his watch. Three o’clock. Too early for dinner. But still plenty of time to work on her little quest. “So what are we doing now? I can drive you around? Show you the sites?”
