She couldn’t.

She was going to be in so much trouble.

The car pulled to a stop. Right by the mailbox.

Oakley just stood there, shaking. She didn’t know what todo.

The window came down. A lady with yellow hair leaned out. “Sweetie, what on earth are you doing down here by yourself? Does your mommy know you are out here?”

“Y-yes.” It was a fib, she knew that. But her mommy would know.Aftershe found Oakley. Oakley would tell her then. “I want to mail…a letter. But…I am too short to reach the mailbox.”

Oakley sniffled and tried not to cry any more. Shewasn’ta baby. She didn’tcry.

“Well, honey, I’m the mail-lady. You just give me your letter, ok? Did you put a stamp on it?”

“Yes.” Oakley nodded really big. “It has a flag on it, too.”

“Good job. And you do have the address just about right, don’t you? You are one of Sheriff Lake’s nieces, then. So sweet, that man, even though he won’t admit it. Next time, though, you put your name up on this side. So we at the post office know who sent it, ok? Which one of the girls are you, honey?”

“Oakley. Oakley Daviess.” Oakley spelled her name. It made her feel good knowing her last name now. “That’s me. It will get to him? You promise?”

“It sure will. It takes about two or three days, though. You hurry on inside, ok? Step back away from the road there. You are a bit too little to be out here by yourself, aren’t you?”

“Probably. But I really wanted to mail my letter and Nanny is watching my baby brother.” And drinking the stinky stuff. But Nanny said that was a secret. Like Oakley’s crayons and watchingScraggle-Poppswhenever they wanted.

“Does she know you are down here?”

“Yes, ma’am. She told me I could.” Another fib, but Nanny had said Oakleyshouldbe able to go outside. That was close enough. “And she told me to come right back after I mailed my letter.”

“You’d better get going, then, kiddo. Have a good day, ok?” The lady wrote something else on Oakley’s letter then put it in a box in the seat. Then she waved at Oakley and smiled. She was really nice.

“Yes, ma’am. You, too.”

Oakley skipped the whole way up to the house. She did it! She’d mailed her letter, and it was going to get there!

She giggled when she took her shoes off and put them where shoes were supposed to go. She just couldn’t stop giggling.

Orion was watching his favorite movie with Prince Rufus and Wonkus McBubbles. Oakley just hugged him and grinned.

She did it!

She did it!

First thing the next morning,Murdoch had one goal in mind. He and the love of his life were going to check out the big elephant in the Garrity room.

Coleson Hollow awaited. But first, he had to find her.

She’d escaped him the night before. On a pretext of her sister-in-law needing her to watch five devil children in Value, or something.

Murdoch suspected he knew the truth. Zoey Sofia had beenhiding.Running from him. He was very scary, after all. But now…

He was hunting his woman down.

It wasn't that hard to do. Not really. There was that white Jeep of hers, parked at her little Garrity nest. Her drive wound around her little one-and-a-half-story bungalow. He pulled into her drive and parked.

She'd heard him pull up. There she was, looking all showery fresh, her hair down around her shoulders. "What are you doing here? Is something wrong?"
