Except he took it a little further because he knows me inside out.

He might not have known about River’s existence until the fundraiser, but he knew if I tried to do some contract marriage I wouldn’t just pick any and anybody. He knew I wouldn’t have been satisfied with a so called business partner.

He knew all of that, so I didn’t him, he beat me.

“I’m really proud of the legacy I’ve left behind for Grayson Inc. and to know that the company I spent my life’s work on will continue growing from strength to strength.” He looks at me when he says that, almost like he can read my mind.

Now that I’m married and he can see how much I love my wife, he knows he doesn’t have to worry about me anymore.

I would never spoil this moment for him by letting him know that even though he tried to save me, I still fucked up.

He puts his hand out to me and I stand.

“Jericho, it gives me the greatest pleasure to award you the position of the new CFO. You earned it son.” He nods with the same pride brightening his eyes and shakes my hand.

“Thank you. I appreciate that and all you’ve done for us.” I hope he knows I mean those words.

He nods again, then looks at Knight who stands.

From the envelope on the table Grandfather pulls out the new certificate of incorporation.

He holds it up so my father can see it, then he shows it to us too.

It says Graysons L.P. That’s our new company name.

Grayson Inc didn’t have an S on it, but Grandfather explained that he wanted this to because it’s us. Two brothers who are as close as brothers can be starting a new empire that will continue with our own legacy. For our kids and their children and their children until the end of time.

Listen to me not just thinking about kids, but grandkids too and beyond.

I hope I get the chance.

Grandfather hands the certificate to Knight and when he stretches out his hand to shake his, Knight gives him a hug instead.

“We’ll take care of it for you,” Knight says.

“I know.” Grandfather nods, then the warmth leaves his eyes as he looks at our father. “Nothing to say Tobias?”

I could almost laugh. If there wasn’t so much angst in my soul I might.

“Well done.” Father says, but he doesn’t mean it.

“Alright, that wraps it up, enjoy the rest of day boys.”

“Thank you.” Knight and I answer at the same time.

Grandfather smiles then he leaves with father.

The tension instantly evaporates from the room in my father’s absence, but it doesn’t leave my heart.

Knight holds up the certificate and smiles at me. “We did it.”

“We did.”

“Judging from the look on your face, I’ll assume you haven’t spoken with River.”

I shake my head. “Wednesday. I’m gonna do it Wednesday. I just needed some time. There’s a chance I could lose her so…I just wanted to make sure I thought of everything I needed to say.”

“I understand. I’m here if you need to talk.”
