“Jericho, stop.” River yells when Sasha’s arms fall to his side and I still keep going.

She comes over to me and when I glance at her and see the panicked look on her face I stop.

The sight of her in distress tames the beast.

Sasha is out cold. A few more punches and I might kill him. I won’t give him that pleasure. Death is too good for people like him.

When dealing with assholes like Sasha Konstantin, you don’t call the police just yet. You go through a different source who will make sure the right justice is served, then they’ll call the police.

My good friend Virgo Antonov from the Russian Mafia came to collect Sasha himself when I made that call.

I met Virgo years ago at MIT. Although he was two years ahead of me, we got on well because of our similar interests. He recently became the leader of his brotherhood, so he was the best person to deal with this situation.

Virgo is the prime example of knowing the right people to get the job done the way you want.

I’ve been assured that Sasha will go back behind bars to serve the rest of his sentence without the possibility of parole, then he won’t bother River ever again.

It will be like he never existed.

So… it’s over.

It’s all over for the people who were against us, but now we have to deal with the aftermath.Ihave to.

River is traumatized from the whole ordeal of tonight and the events of this week with her father.

We got home, to my house, a few minutes ago.

We went straight up to our bedroom where she sat on the bed and curled into the stack of pillows. I’ve crouched next to her and she’s holding my hand so tight her knuckles barely have any color.

She looks so frail I feel like I should wrap her in cotton wool. She didn’t even get to change out of her costume, and her hair is down and mangled from the struggle with Sasha.

I wish like hell I could have gotten to her sooner than I did. I might have stopped her from experiencing so much terror.

“Do you need me to get you some water, or anything?” I ask, kissing over her knuckles.

“No. I just need you. Just you.”

“You got me, Mermaid.”

I kick off my shoes and lie next to her, holding her close so she can feel my protection.

I wake before River the next morning and leave her to sleep while I sort out some business so I can spend the rest of the day with her.

As it’s early I go into the garage and work on my Mustang.

I’m graced with her dainty footsteps an hour later and I roll out from under my car.

We see each other and I remember that day in here after she first came to live with me.

I remember the look on her face when she discovered that piece of trash car she was driving was gone. She was ready to hand me my ass.

My, how far we’ve come and still there’s more.

We’re not fixed yet. We’re still a work in progress.
