The TV is on in the living room, so I assume Gina is in there.

When I walk in, my heart falls through my stomach when I find her lying on the ground. Next to her is a broken cup with tea spilled all over the white rug.

“Gina!” I cry, rushing to her side.

I check to see if she’s breathing.

But she’s not.

Ihad to do CPR on Gina to bring her back.

Me.

I had to do that to save my dear aunt’s life, and if I’d done anything wrong or been any later than I was, I might have come home and found her dead.

She would have died, just like Mom.

I called the paramedics before I started, and they picked up where I left off when they arrived.

I’ve been at the hospital for the last hour, sitting in the waiting room, waiting for the doctors to update me with what’s happening. Dad and Eden are on the way, so I’ve just been here by myself going crazy with worry.

The doctors have been running various tests and scans. The last time we were here like this, she’d had the accident and was in surgery for hours.

It was horrible, but at least we had more of a sense of what was happening and a bit more hope. I feel this is to do with those chest pains. The moment I told the doctors about them, they looked worried.

Dr. French, the consultant who has been taking care of Gina, approaches the door, and I jump out of my seat to rush toward him.

I’ve seen him a few times when I’ve taken Gina to her appointments. He’s an elderly doctor in his seventies who has worked in the field for years, so I know Gina has been in good hands.

“How is she?” I talk so fast I’m tripping over my words.

“She’s stable at the moment.”

“Can I see her?”

“In a little while. I’d like to talk to you in private first.” He gives me a kind smile, but it’s the sort you give a person when you pity them, not the kind you give because there’s nothing to worry about.

“Okay.”

“Let’s go in my office.” His pale gray eyes take me in with more pity.

We head to his office on the next floor. My trepidation increases with every second that passes. By the time we sit, I just want to scream.

“It’s her heart, isn’t it?” I cut to the chase.

“Yes.”

“What’s wrong with her? There was nothing wrong before.”

He blows out a ragged breath. “Actually, there was. Gina has been a patient of mine for over fifteen years.”

All the air in my lungs stills, then it drains into the ether. “What? That can’t be right. I didn’t know.”

Why didn’t I know? That length of time means Gina would have been seeing him since before Mom died.
