Every time she almost catches me staring, I look away, but I know she can see me watching. I haven’t been completely covert.

“You should have added unnecessary looking to your list, too,” she says when my gaze returns to the rounded swells of her breasts.

“What?” I heard her. I just want her to clarify.

“I said you should have added unnecessary looking to your list.”

I grin back at her for taking that ballsy attitude with me again. It’s sexier tonight.

She gives me a sharp stare with those green eyes of hers I could swim in and raises perfectly arched brows.

“A man can look, can’t he?”

“Not when he’s not supposed to be looking.” She smirks, batting long thick lashes at me.

“You look beautiful.”

“Thank you,” she says after a few beats, but there’s that polite tone again.

I don’t like it, but I realize she’s setting boundaries, too, so I think of something safer to talk about.

“Are you nervous?”

“A little. I’ve never been to the Astoria before, so I don’t know what to expect. Eden played there once for a function. She says it’s beautiful.”

“It is. You’ll like it.”

The Astoria is an invite-only association for the world’s elite which hosts a number of fundraisers and other gatherings. It’s also the only social club I can tolerate where I can co-exist with my father’s side of the family.

“Sounds like I will.” She nods but then looks more nervous. “This will also be the first time I meet your family, even though I know of them.”

That’s right. Tonight will be the first introduction to us as a couple.

It’s strange when I think back to our reasons for our secret romance. Our parents and Knight’s obsession with not making things worse with our father. Neither of those things would be strong enough reasons to make us secret now, except tonight, we’re a different kind of secret.

“It’ll be fine,” I assure her, but it’s for my benefit, too.

“Yeah. I’m sure we will.” She knows that I’m the sort of ruthless that will make it okay because failure is not an option.

“Yeah.”

We stare at each other for a moment before she goes back to looking out the window. I do the same, but on my side.

It’s not long after that we reach the Astoria, and I can see the press already waiting outside.

River spots them, too, and looks back at me.

“Seems like it’s showtime.” Her voice rises a little.

“You ready?”

“Yes.”

The moment the car pulls up, the press are on us, but my, oh, my do they go crazy when River steps out and I slip my arm around her, making it overtly obvious that we’re a couple, and she is my leading lady tonight.

Flashes from the cameras go wild, looking like a lightning storm, but with her pressed up against me, all I can focus on is the feel of her soft body and the sweet magnolia scent of her.

River is a natural, smiling for the cameras, showing off her decadent beauty. She gives just the right amount of attention as if she’s done this all her life.
