His smile widens. “Just a healthy baby and for my Aurora to get through it all. I’ve been reading way too much about pregnancy and labor.”

I stare back at my brother feeling like I’m trapped in an alternate reality. The one with this new version of Knight. In the one where I belong, he used to talk about fast cars, hot women, and art. This Knight seems to become more obsessed with his wife with every passing day. That said, even though I don’t have a paternal bone in my body and I hate that I was forced to find a wife, I can accept it’s good to hear him talk like this.

“She’ll be okay, and you’ll get that healthy baby.”

“Thank you. I think this girl is good for you, Jericho. You actually said the wordbabythis time without looking like you’re gonna barf.”

I smirk. “I guess some things change.”

“They certainly do, but yeah, River is definitely good for you. She’s certainly getting on well with Aurora. You’d think they’ve known each other for years.”

“I know.” I thought the same thing.

“That’s a good thing. Everything is good.” He nods his approval. “I was worried about you.”

“Nothing to worry about, as you can see.”

“Yeah, and I guess this means you’re enroute to getting the CFO position.” He raises his glass again, and I follow.

“Enroute.”

“You pretty much have it in the bag. Grandfather was talking about going ahead with the company separation when he awards you the role instead of when he retires.”

My sprits lift on hearing that. “That would be great. We’d be in complete control over Park Avenue sooner rather than later.” More importantly, we’d be free from our father.

I’ve worked with him a few times since Grandfather asked me to take over Bastian’s duties. It’s a good thing I have the backbone and tolerance to deal with my father because every experience has been horrendous.

“I’m working on him. I’m sure he can see that we’re ready.”

“We always were.”

Knight dips his head. “Tonight gets us one step closer. Your wedding will be another.” He looks over my shoulder and grins. “Duty calls, brother.”

I follow his gaze and see that River and Aurora have returned. River is looking right at me as she glides across the hall.

All the kisses we shared tonight flow right back into my mind, and lust shoots straight to my dick, making me rock-hard for her again.

This is where I’m supposed to control myself, but those reins have slipped right out of my grasp.

“I guess this is good night, then.” Knight chuckles, but I barely register he’s spoken.

I’m already on my feet moving toward the beautiful mermaid, loving how the light bounces off her silky hair, making her look like she just stepped out of a dream.

We meet in middle, and desire compels me to kiss her again, but I stop myself. The cameras are gone now. There’s no need to continue an act.

Except I was never acting.

I indulge myself by leaning close to the shell of her ear and inhaling her scent. I want to lick her skin and other things that will get me in trouble.

“Ready to go?” I ask, brushing my cheek against hers.

“Yeah. I guess it’s late.”

“Did you have a good time?” I straighten, facing her.

“I did. Your family were all nice.”

“All?” She knows I’m referring to my father and Sloane because hell hasn’t frozen over yet, so there’s no way they’d be nice to anybody.
