I grabbed my suits and placed them in a suit holder and placed them on my bed. I was surprised that Katherine hadn’t come out of her room yet. I was sure I was making enough noise to raise the dead in here. I wasn’t exactly pleased to be here or doing this, so I knew I had probably been banging everything around in here.

I walked over to her bedroom door and stood there quietly for a while, just listening. Nothing. Not even the sound of a shower running. I knocked on the door and called out her name again.

“Katherine!”

Still no response.

I knew she’d had some trouble sleeping a year or so back and had gone to the doctor to get some sleeping pills, but I had thought she was over that now. Not that we even spoke these days. Anything we did say to each other was usually in raised voices, or with her screaming at me. It was times like that when I was glad our house sat back and away from the rest, or surely the police would have been around due to the report of a domestic disturbance.

I knocked on the door again, more loudly this time, hoping to wake her up without having to go into her room. That was one thing we had agreed on, and as far as I knew, she had stuck to it. Our bedrooms were our own sanctuaries. Neither of us would enter one another’s bedroom unless invited. I needed to speak to her, though, before I left. Needed to let her know that I was leaving the house until our divorce was over.

As she still hadn’t answered the door, I slowly opened it and called out her name again.

“Katherine, are you in here? I need to talk to you.”

It surprised me that this was the only room in the house, apart from my own, that was in total darkness. Not wanting to put the main light on just in case I startled her, I walked closer to her bed and the bedside cabinet, where there was a lamp.

I got the sudden whiff of something that smelled metallic. I couldn’t place the smell, but I was sure I recognised it from somewhere. As I got closer to the bed, the smell got stronger, to the point it was almost turning my stomach. When I reached the lamp, I switched it on and went to gently wake Katherine up. What I was faced with nearly had me collapsing on the floor.

Katherine was lying on the bed, totally naked, tied to the bed by her hands and feet. Her legs were wide apart, and her whole body and the bed were covered in blood. I looked down and noticed that the wordWHOREhad been carved onto her stomach.

My stomach couldn’t hold back any longer, and I rushed into the bathroom, promptly throwing up into the toilet. It took me a few minutes to compose myself as I sat there on the bathroom floor. I knew I would have to go back in there at some point, so I got up from the floor and splashed cold water all over my face.

I couldn’t believe this had happened. Who could have done this?

I had a sudden feeling. What if she wasn’t dead? I ran back out into the bedroom and checked her pulse. It was then that I noticed her body was stone cold. How long had she been lying here like this?

I quickly pulled out my phone and dialled 999.

“Emergency. Which service do you require? Fire, police, or ambulance?”

“Police, I need the police.”

I started to panic as I looked at my wife’s lifeless body in front of me. I could feel myself starting to shake as the police operator came onto the phone. I knew I was going into shock as I listened to the operator talking to me. I was just standing there staring at Katherine’s body.

The call operator finally snapped me out of my daze, and I ran through everything with them. It wasn’t long before I heard the police sirens in the distance.

“I have to go downstairs to open the gates to the house.”

“Okay, I will stay on the line until the police arrive.”

I walked down the stairs and pressed the button to open the gates, just as two police cars arrived outside my house. I opened the door and waited for them to walk over to me.

“Are the officers there now?”

“Yes.”

“Okay, I will hang up now.”

The line went dead as two police officers walked up to me.

“Mr. Cooper?”

“Yes.”

“You reported your wife is dead.”

“Yes, let me show you.”
