“Thanks. I needed this.”
“You are welcome. Now, are you going to tell me how you’re really feeling?”
HowwasI feeling? I wasn’t really sure I could answer that myself. I couldn’t believe what was happening to me. Things had seemed so easy earlier today, and now they were completely up in the air with me being a suspect in my wife’s murder.
“I’m not sure I know myself. I just feel numb. All I can see is Katherine’s body whenever I close my eyes. That word carved on her stomach. There were a lot of things I would have called her, but that wasn’t one of them. As far as I know, she was only ever seeing Kevin. I wouldn’t exactly call her a whore for that, even though she was married to me.”
I felt Richard pull me towards him again. I guessed he needed the closeness as much as me.
“Hey, handsome, just remember I’m here for you no matter what. You aren’t alone in this now.”
I was quite shocked when he’d called mehandsome. Up until now, I had been the only one to use a nickname, and that was only because Richard had told me his name was Romeo, and it kind of just stuck. I turned in his embrace and looked at him as he smiled down at me. I must have been the luckiest guy in the world to end up in the same bar as my Romeo. We both sat there looking at each other when Richard’s phone started to ring, startling us both.
“It’s Mason. I’d better get this.”
I smiled at Richard and gave him a nod of agreement as he answered the phone.
“Hi, Mace… Yes, he is next to me. Do you want me to go onto speakerphone? Okay, two secs. We are both here now.”
I watched as Richard turned on the speakerphone, sitting there wondering why his boss would want to talk to me.
“Hello, Daniel. If you didn’t already know, I am Mason King, and I’m the eldest King brother. You met my brother, Jayden, the other day.”
“Yes. I just wish the circumstances today were the same as then.”
“Well, hopefully, after I tell you what Callum said, I can ease your worry a little.”
I wasn’t sure that anything Mason could tell me would stop the feelings I was having now, but I knew this wasn’t going to go away soon.
Richard took my hand in his and gave it a slight squeeze. The connection between us was amazing; both of us seemed to know when the other needed comforting or a little push in the right direction. I knew couples experienced this, but I had always thought it would grow over time, not something that was almost instantaneous like between me and Richard. I turned to see his smiling and reassuring face looking back at me.
“Mace, what did Callum say?” Richard asked the question that I didn’t want to ask.
I needed to know, but I was too afraid to hear the answer.
“Well, to start off with, as he told you, Daniel, Callum doesn’t for one moment think that you killed your wife. The unfortunate thing is, whoever did it has given the police enough evidence to make it look as though you did. He hasn’t been able to tell me much more than you already know, but suggested we investigate where the money has been sent that has come from your account. After speaking to Jayden as well, I suggest we do further investigation on your wife’s ex-fiancé, Kevin Wright. Please don’t worry, Daniel. I am sure we will get to the bottom of this. You have the whole Kings team helping you now.”
I couldn’t understand why this man I had never met before would pull his entire senior team together just to help me.
“Mason, please don’t think I’m ungrateful, but why would you do this for me? I’ve never met you or the rest of the team. Why would you pull all your senior team together just to help me?”
I felt a squeeze on my hand and looked over to Richard. Was this because of him? Was his boss accepting me as being a significant part of his employee’s life?
Mason spoke again. “I’m sure Richard will fill you in with some of the details, but it’s what we do for our friends and colleagues. Richard is the last of the senior team to find hisone. From what I am hearing, you two have fallen hard for each other, the same as the rest of us have done with our wives and fiancées. Just because the two of you are gay, that makes no difference to any of us. We look after our own and will do everything we can to prove your innocence.”
I felt the tears starting to form in my eyes as the anxiety I’d been feeling started to change to relief, knowing I had all the help a man could need to prove his innocence. I tried to thank Mason, but I was struggling to form any kind of words. I looked over to Richard, who immediately realised my dilemma.
“Thanks, Mace. I’m sure Daniel appreciates it. He’s just a little choked up now.”
“No problem, Richard. I will let you have the rest of the evening together. Try not to worry, Daniel. You’ve come to the best. Richard, we can talk about a plan of action tomorrow in the morning meeting.”
Everyone said their goodbyes, and I was left alone with Richard again. He was still holding my hand as we sat there, gently running circles over it with his finger. I could tell this was more of a nervous reaction than him wanting to comfort me.
“What’s going through your head, Romeo? Not having second thoughts, are you?”
I was really hoping that he wasn’t. I had never felt this way before with a man, to the point that I craved his touch constantly.
“No, not at all. I just wanted to ask you something, but I’m not sure how you will react.”
