“I’m sure it will be okay. But if that’s what you want, then it’s fine. I’ll leave you the Wi-Fi code before I leave for work.”

He gave me a sad nod before he suddenly brightened up. “I’ll tell you what. Let me cook dinner this evening. I should make myself useful. Anything you don’t like?”

I shook my head.

“I have the perfect meal then, but you will have to wait and find out what it is.”

I was currently sitting in my office trawling through hours of security footage of Daniel’s house. The whole team was now aware of the situation and working on different areas to try and prove Daniel’s innocence. I was pleased that Callum didn’t believe that Daniel had killed Katherine, but it was also a worry that he was currently the number one suspect from the evidence the police had.

I heard footsteps approaching my office and knew it was Kye before he even entered the room. I looked up just as he walked into the room with a concerned look on his face. I knew he had been looking into something regarding the case, but he had kept what that was to himself. He sat down and started to speak before I could even acknowledge that he was there.

“I’ve been running the security camera footage through a program I have, and there are far too many inconsistencies.”

As always, he got straight to the point. We hardly got any pleasantries from Kye when he had this head on.

“What do you mean, inconsistencies?”

He put his laptop on my desk and opened it, showing a timeline. I sat there for a moment staring at the screen in front of me, perplexed at what I was actually looking at. I looked up and saw Kye smiling down at me. He chuckled and then started to speak.

“You don’t see it, do you?”

Never had a truer word been said. I really didn’t understand what I was looking at. He must have seen this and continued.

“This is a timeline of the security cameras in Daniel’s house. It shows you when they are working, or if they have been switched off. We already know that all cameras, bar one, were off when Daniel supposedly murdered his wife, but if you look here, there are times when certain cameras are switched off. Mainly in the afternoon and if you follow them, they always lead to Katherine’s bedroom. If she was having an affair, as we assume, this would be the perfect way to get someone into the house without Daniel seeing the footage.”

I stared at Kye in amazement. How the hell had he found out all of this in just a short space of time? I was struggling just to sit through the footage we had managed to download from the day of the murder.

“I’m not going to ask how you found this out so quickly. But what do you think this means?”

I watched as Kye shook his head.

“You really do have it bad, don’t you? Just think about it for a moment. If someone is messing around, switching cameras on and off, don’t you think they may have messed around with the footage that you are watching? We already know that Callum got an anonymous phone call a couple of days before this happened. It’s almost as if the real murderer was setting everything up to pin Daniel to the murder.”

Kye was right. I hadn’t even considered running the video of the day through my program to see if there were any inconsistencies or continuity issues.

“I hadn’t even thought of that.”

“I guessed you wouldn’t, so I have taken the liberty of doing it for you. Let’s just say that whoever got hold of this footage and changed it is good. But not as good as me.” He pulled up the video I had been watching for the past hour on his laptop screen. “Now, keep an eye out for the time at the bottom and watch closely.”

I sat and watched. Nothing appeared to happen until just before we watched Daniel walk into the house.

“What just happened?”

“That’s what I was getting at. They are good, but not that good. You can see the twitch of the video, as if it has been spliced together. If you look at the clock while Daniel is walking around, it is slightly different. Now, watch again as Daniel walks up the stairs.”

I continued to watch, and the same thing happened again. This time, though, the clock went back to the same as it had been in the beginning.

“What have I just seen there?”

Kye gave me a devilish smile before he spoke. “You have just seen a video that has been spliced together and digitally changed. Most people wouldn’t have noticed it. The only reason I did was because the program I ran found inconsistencies between the time shown on the timeline and the data held on the system. As I said, whoever did this was good, but not quite good enough.”

I sat there for a moment, allowing Kye’s words to sink in. This meant that we had proof that it wasn’t Daniel who committed his wife’s murder.

“We need to tell the police. This proves Daniel is innocent.”

“Hold your horses, Richard. This only proves that someone has messed around with the digital recording. It doesn’t prove or disprove that Daniel is innocent. For the record, I agree that he is innocent, but we need to find out who did this and see if we can find any other proof. I already reached out to one of my contacts before I came in here, but it might be worth getting Tyler up here to help, as I may have to disappear for a couple of days. Please don’t ask me what I’m doing. Just know that it’s to help you and Daniel.”

We all knew that it was best not to ask Kye about certain things. We knew about his past, and that was all we needed to know.
