“I do, however, need the keys to your car. We will need to take it in for forensic testing.”

I nodded my head and headed over to my bag on the side that contained my car keys. I pulled them out of the bag, walked back over to Callum, and gave them to him.

“Thanks. I will give you both a minute to say goodbye, alone. I will be outside waiting for you.”

I gave Callum a smile of thanks and turned back to my Romeo. I could see he was starting to lose it, so I pulled him into me again and held him, allowing him to let some of the pain out. I knew I didn’t have long, though. Callum was waiting, and I knew he would be back if I didn’t go out there soon.

I released my hold on him and moved away slightly, allowing his eyes to meet mine. I gave him a smile and then pressed my lips against his. Try as I might, I didn’t want this to feel like a kiss goodbye, but that was exactly how it felt. A kiss that was saying goodbye, possibly for a long time without the words being said.

I pulled away and spoke. “It will be fine, Romeo. I know you can prove my innocence. This is just a small setback. We will be together soon, and no one will be able to stop that. Just have some faith in our justice system. Everything is going to be okay.”

I gave him one last kiss before I started to walk away. I didn’t want to say goodbye, because in this situation, it sounded so final. As I started to walk towards the door, Richard grabbed hold of my arm, pulled me towards him, and flung his arms around me. The tears were pouring down his face again.

“I love you, Daniel.”

“I love you too, Romeo.”

Reluctantly, he let go of me, allowing me to leave the room and go meet Callum in the hallway. His face said it all as I walked over to him. He didn’t want to do this any more than I wanted him to. But he had a job to do, and neither of us could stop that.

“Are you ready, Daniel?”

I gave him a small smile. “As ready as I will ever be.”

He gave a quick nod of the head, and I followed him out of the apartment to find the two police officers standing post outside the front door. I just hoped that no one else had seen them standing there. I didn’t want to cause any trouble for Richard. If I had known what was about to happen, I would never have approached him that evening.

What was I thinking? Of course I would have done that. I was instantly attracted to him. There was no way I would have let anyone else have him unless he didn’t like me. I followed the police officers to the lift, and we headed down to their car.

As we walked out the back entrance to the building, their car was parked in the visitors’ car park. We stepped over to the car, and one of the police officers opened the back door of the car and helped me in.

“I’ll sit in the back with Mr. Cooper,” Callum told him. “You can sit in the front with Officer Brown.”

I was pleased that I at least had someone I knew in the back. Also, I wasn’t wearing handcuffs. At least Richard could argue that I was just helping the police with their inquiries if any nosy neighbour asked. Callum walked around the back of the car and got in next to me, followed by the two officers in the front.

As we pulled away from the building, I took one last look back. Would that be the last time I saw Richard as a free man? Only time would tell. All I knew now was that my freedom was in the hands of King Brothers Investigation Services, and I had to hope they were as good as I had been told they were.

Chapter Twenty-Four

Richard

Istood in the middle of the room trying to comprehend what had just happened. I’d had the man of my dreams in my house for less than seventy-two hours, and already, he had been taken away from me. I was rooted to the spot in shock, tears pouring down my face. I was starting to realise how it had felt to the rest of the team when they lost the ones they loved. I knew that Daniel couldn’t be behind any of this, but who was?

I realised that I had to get hold of Daniel’s solicitor and snapped myself out of the funk I had gotten myself into. Walking over to the desk where he had been working yesterday, I found his Filofax and the solicitor’s card within it. I picked up my phone and dialled the number. Luckily, it had his personal mobile number on there, or I would never have gotten hold of him on a Saturday. It was only a couple of rings before a gentleman answered the call.

“James Forsythe speaking.”

“Good afternoon, Mr. Forsythe. My name is Richard White, and I am calling on behalf of Daniel Cooper.”

I didn’t get to explain any more before I was cut off by James.

“What’s happened to Daniel? Have they arrested him for his wife’s murder?”

It was now apparent that Daniel had already explained everything to his solicitor, which made my life a lot easier. I still needed to tell him about the car accident, though.

“Yes, he has, but there has been another incident. Kevin Wright has been involved in a serious car accident, and the police have been given footage showing that Daniel caused it. They have arrested him for that as well. He has been taken to New Scotland Yard, and Detective Callum Stevenson is dealing with the case.”

There was silence at the end of the phone for a moment, as though he was contemplating what to do. After a short while, he replied.

“I know Callum very well, along with your boss, Mason King. I’m sorry. Daniel told me everything yesterday morning when he called. I take it you will be looking into this evidence and establishing whether it is credible?”
