I followed a circuit to the top, and found a massive cannon surrounded by dozens of tourists. Still no Duncan. I sagged against the outer battlements, my heart racing from running six city blocks in as many minutes. I hardly saw the city below.

Finally, I did what I should have done as soon as I got the shuttle driver to turn around. I pulled out my phone and found the contact Duncan had put there this morning. Ignoring the list of new voicemail notifications from Lincoln, I pressed the button.

He answered on the second ring.

“Hi,” I said, out of breath and unsure how to start.

“Hello.” His voice sounded somehow deeper than usual through the telephone. “I’m flattered to think you miss me already.”

“I do, Duncan, so much. I think leaving was a mistake.” Only, I didn’t want to have this conversation over the phone. I needed him in front of me. Indefinitely, if I could swing it. “I’mhere. I’m at the castle looking for you.”

“You’re here?” His voice rose a touch. “Where are you?”

I looked at my map, but my poor brain couldn’t process it all. “I don’t know. I’m by a cannon, kind of at the top.”

“One cannon, or a lot?”

“Just one.”

“I’ll be there in two minutes.”

I grinned like a madwoman as I listened to him breathing, and by the sound of his footsteps, I guessed he was running through the castle grounds just as I had done.

Any second now.

Any. Second.

“Molly!”

Duncan. I might have turned into a supernova. He climbed the last set of stairs to the upper level, looking a sweet mix of surprised and delighted. I threw myself into his arms, and he caught me up so my feet dangled above the ground. I kissed him hard, stamping this moment on my heart.

Core memory unlocked.

He had just as much enthusiasm, kissing me back with a passionate fire until I grew dizzy from it.

Mine. All mine.

I had to break the kiss, if only for a moment, and he set me back on the ground. “What are you doing here? I thought you didn’t care about the castle.”

The affection in his eyes hit me straight between the ribs, coloring my heart like it meant to dye it permanently.

“I was taking pictures to send to you. The real question is, what areyoudoing here?”

I flashed a crooked smile. “I had an opportunity I didn’t want to miss.”

A glint of satisfaction danced in his eyes, and then he kissed me thoroughly. He held me close against him like he would never let go again. I fit alongside him so perfectly, it was crazy to think I had ever thought I could leave him. I was completely lost for this wonderful, unexpected man.

I tried to look stern but couldn’t pull it off the way he did. “I’ve decided I need a new business plan, after all.”

“And a visa I think, but we can handle that.”

We held each other, gazing out over Edinburgh below.

“I love you.” I craned my neck to look at him. Scary to say those words so quickly, but undeniably true. “Is that crazy?”

“Not crazy at all, since I love you, too.”

Yeah. That required more kisses.
