I sit straight, my hands fisting his shirt at the sides, and stare with a smile across my face.

He pulls off the road, parking the bike and helping me to slide off. Once I’m on my feet, he tosses his arm over my shoulder, tugging me back to the beach. We're closer to the north border, but Alvaro said the pact states that neither cartel can step foot in the other’s territory.

It’s why I ran here in the first place.

I don’t know what I’m going to do about this, but I do know I need to get back to my brother and run. My stupid, gullible heart aches at the thought of never seeing Alvaro again, but it’ll just have to get over it. Maybe Mero can help me do that.

We walk along the street, a giant resort blocking my view of the fireworks until we round the building and step onto the sandy beach. The area we’re in is practically deserted, everyone having moved further down the shoreline to watch the show. He leads me to a group of palm trees and sits on the sand. I sit next to him, wrapping my arms around my knees as I marvel at the pretty lights in the sky.

“There’s always a celebration in Acapulco,” Mero says, his face glowing from the colorful explosions.

My mind wanders to the fireworks I saw behind my eyelids as Alvaro touched me, taking me to heights I’d never been to before.

I close my eyes and picture how perfectly rough his hands were against my body, how his words were laced with what I thought was sincerity. How his green eyes burned with hunger as he slid my panties off and dipped his mouth to my core, licking and sucking me like he wanted everything I could give him. In the wind, I can almost hear his sighs, his groans, whispered lies.

Will he be that way with Katalina? Touching her the way he touched me, staring at her with the same hungry eyes? I bite my lip when a sob threatens to break free and discreetly wipe my eyes, cleaning the evidence of my sorrow away.

My new friend reaches for my chin, turning me to face him. His eyes spy the wetness on my lashes. “He hurt you badly, didn’t he?”

The sobs I tried to swallow down break through with his question. I nod my head and try to pull away but he stops me by wrapping his arm around my waist, pulling me onto his lap. My hands rest on his strong chest, my shaking breaths getting stuck in my lungs while my heart freezes. He cups my jaw, his thumb rubbing down my bottom lip and to my chin, his eyes trailing after his hand before clashing with mine once more.

“We can talk about it if you want, or we can play pretend for tonight. Two strangers with no hearts, no past, and no future.”

I stare into his eyes, too afraid to use my voice. I give a small, shaky nod before our lips meet, my fingertips on his stubbled jaw, his fist in my hair. We kiss like we need it to survive. His mouth opens as his tongue dips in, tasting and caressing me so sweetly. I turn my face, wanting his kiss on my neck, rolling my hips against him. He groans against my skin, his teeth biting me lightly as his hands slide up my shirt and beneath my bra where he rolls my nipples roughly.

I moan at the pleasurable pain and pull my shirt off, not caring if anyone sees us or not, but also knowing we’re hidden in the darkness. When my shirt is off, he licks between the valley of my breasts, pulling the cups of my bra down and sucking on my nipples.

Let’s just play pretend.

Yes, that’s what I’ll do. I’m going to spend this night in the arms of a stranger, letting him use my body as I use his. Just for the night, I will lose myself to this tryst and have peace from the betrayal burning in my chest.

Mero lifts me then, taking my shirt with him as he carries me. “I won’t have you on a beach where others can see you.”

That makes me feel all kinds of sexy. Like he wants to keep me for himself.

Ah, yes, this ‘sex with a stranger’ business is working pretty well so far.

As he walks back toward the bike while kissing me, he navigates the uneven ground with confidence and ease. I giggle against him, nervous about falling but knowing we won’t.

“I can walk,” I tell him, our lips still touching.

“I like you in my arms,” he says back as we’re suddenly inside a building. “Besides, this is my apartment. A short walk.”

I look around at the empty lobby as we enter an elevator and note that there’s a receptionist desk but it’s empty.

Once the elevator doors slide shut, Mero pushes me up against the wall. I hiss at the coldness of the metal, but he swallows it down when his mouth crashes to mine once again. Before I’m even aware of it, we’re inside an apartment. He puts me down on my feet and reaches behind his neck to pull his shirt off.

Once his face reappears, I quickly pull him back to my lips.

“Tan impaciente,” he says against my lips while lifting me once again and walking us through a hall and into a bedroom. He drops me on a large bed, but I don’t bother looking around because he’s right, I’m very impatient.

He unclips my bra from the clasp between my breasts, letting the cups fall to the side. His mouth is back on my skin, biting my nipples and making me moan as he kisses his way down my body, his blue eyes on me as he undoes my jeans and pulls them down with my panties, my sneakers getting tugged off in the process.

When I’m completely bare, he stands straight and bites his lip, his eyes scouring my body like he’s putting it to memory.

“Fucking beautiful,” he says, making me blush. “Cómo te perdió?”I hear him ask himself, but I don't want to think about Alvaro or how he lost me.

Sitting up, I hold his stare while licking his lower stomach, dipping my tongue beneath the waistband of his joggers and briefs, earning a throaty groan from him.
