CHAPTER8

“Look, Clint, I’m desperate here,” he said as he did what was probably his tenth lap around the kitchen island.

“Rollo, man, I don’t know what to tell you. The witches are busy working on Jack. From what I can tell, it’s gonna be a few more days at least,” came the reply.

“A few more days? Are you kidding me?! I can’t keep a nanny locked up in my house for a few more days! I need someone to wipe her memory or put a spell…I don’t know what they do, but I need it done now!”

Dude, don’t come unglued. It’s just a nanny. You’ve faced down worse.

He almost chuckled at the thought. For whatever reason, it didn’t help that his wolf was totally losing his shit over her as well.Great.If only he had some time to shift and go for a run in the woods. That usually calmed him down when his wolf got out of hand.

“Maybe you can get some fae to help? What about June? I’m sure she’d be happy to bring a bunch of her little Children of the Vortex followers over there to practice their magic on your nanny since the witches are busy. And by the way, you should be happy they think they can help Jack.”

“Of course, I’m happy. But dammit, it was going to be hard enough for me to ask the witches. But June? I am fine with her watching the boys, but we never talk about that fae magic. No, thanks.”

“You crack me up, man. The big bad wolf afraid of some little woman.”

“Don’t even play, you know they freak you out too. And I am not sure how I feel about June having Tam or Wendy ‘practice’ on this woman’s mind. Anyhow, can you have Dax call me asap? You think maybe Bloom could do it, or get one of her other Fae friends?”

“I don’t know, man, but I’ll pass on the message. It’s gonna be tough, though, with everyone on high alert. And Tam definitely can’t. The witches already have her helping with Jack.”

“Working with the witches? She’s fae, isn’t she?”

“I guess she’s trying to soak everything in. Start trying to figure out a woman and you’re in trouble. If she’s fae or, god forbid, a witch…lost cause. Anyhow, why can’t you just apologize to this lady and get her to stick around?”

He let out a laugh. “I almost wish I could, but I don’t think there’s any coming back from more or less kidnapping her,” he shot back. What he didn’t want to say was that he was afraid of what complications might arise if she did stay.

“Okay, man, whatever you say, but never say never. I mean, you get rid of her, you’re still gonna need another nanny. Besides, I’ve seen stranger things. Did you at least explain to her why you had to do it? Because as I see it, at this point you may have to protect her,” Clint said. “I mean, Frederick is capable of anything, and what if he is somehow aware of her? Just something to consider.”

“Oh shit. With everything going on, that didn’t even occur to me. Shit.”

“Yeah, man, I hear you, everyone is on high alert. You more than most, I’m sure. Anyway, I’ll pass on the message. Stay safe.”

Awesome.Not.

He put his phone away and heard it click against the other phone in his pocket.

Hers.He had grabbed that last night too. He had his blocker up, but figured it was a good precaution. This whole thing was getting complicated. Didn’t help that he had kind of admired her moxy when he had found her passed out with her rolling pin. And she did look pretty cute this morning.Stop it, buddy.Right. He definitely didn’t need to give his wolf any more reason to freak out. He was having a difficult time keeping him in check as it was.

He sipped some more coffee. “Stop being such a softie, Rollo,” he said out loud to no one in particular.

But he was right. This was no game. True, it wasn’t her fault, but he couldn’t just let her go now. Not before the witches or someone did their spell thing. It pays to have friends in high places,he thought. Or at least to have friends. In Fae Crossing, they all depended on one another. It was a sort of awkward relationship at times, and a pretty unique one as far as what he had heard. But it had served the Fae, as well as the shifters pretty well. Even the witches had their place.

Maybe I should just have June do one of her whammies and have her forget all about this unfortunate hostage episode? But that would only get him so far. He still needed a nanny. Could they do a spell to make her like shifters?Or at least be willing to work for them as a nanny,he corrected himself.

Ugh, he didn’t even know what the limits were on spells.

He would just take it a minute at a time.

As if I don’t have enough to worry about already.

And what if she is in danger now? Fuck.

Why did things have to be so complicated?

“Look,Winona, I can’t let you go yet. I’m sure this is difficult.”
