He reaches for my face and twirls his fingers around the gentle slope of my chin.

“We finally found you. It’s by a stroke of luck we got here in time.” Victor places a hand on the brick exterior of the club and leans in to run his nose up the side of my face, inhaling deeply. “I’ve wanted to do that for a long time. Now that I have your scent you’ll never get away from me. I look forward to getting you inside where we can…talk.”

He means off me slowly and painfully without witnesses. I know code talk when I hear it.

“We have little time before someone else tries to collect on the contract again. We got lucky once, let’s not push our luck. Let’s go.”

Darius takes my hand and drags me forward, making my shoes drop from my feet. I fall into his arms and he lifts me easily against his chest cutting off all options of running.

I turn, our lips nearly touching but the power in Darius’ gaze holds me captive. “We killed for you once, I don’t want to leave more bodies if we don’t have to.”

Dark brown eyes meet my fake brown ones. “I’m not thanking you for killing those two so you can collect on my contract instead.”

Darius’s smile is stunning. “It’s not your gratitude we want.”

“Then what do you want?” I ask tentatively, already wishing I hadn’t opened my mouth.

“You.” And then he takes my mouth in a kiss without asking or caring about what I want. It’s hard, punishing and unforgiving just like the man. He’s not a man that asks. I know this. Criminals have a nasty habit of reaching out and claiming what they want with no fucks to give.

I break away, breathing harshly. “Like hell—”

He slides his hands up my back and we get three steps toward a black SUV parked behind Sharkskin’s car when the sound of a gun going off reverberates off the alley walls.

Darius drops to his knees and the other two move in front of us like shields, guns raised.

Bullets zing past my head to bury in red brick.

I’m cocooned into a chest made of steel but I’m not naïve enough to think either of us are bulletproof. Darius moves his hand between us and I feel him pulling out a weapon.

I try to get free. I shove at him but his arm only tightens around me.

“Stop moving!” Darius orders, harshly.

“We’re sitting ducks!” I scream and writher in his arms, but he’s not letting me go.

“There are more! Too many, Darius!” If I have to die tonight, I would rather it be by their hands, but I want to at least make them work for it.

Augustine and Victor send rounds into the surrounding darkness. Male grunts come back in return.

“We need to go! D’Angelo will break the deal if we get her killed.”

“Just give us the girl and you three assholes and skip out, no harm done,” a voice calls from the direction of the cars.

Bile rises in the back of my throat.

“You don’t have to do this. You don’t have to kill me or let them get to me. Darius.” Wait. What did Darius say? “My father made a deal with you?”

“You’re ours,” he grits out, possession shining brightly in his eyes. “No one is touching you.”

I like the confidence in his voice. But still…“I’m not letting you or anyone win tonight! Let me go!” Whatever deal he’s talking about is probably bullshit if he won’t answer a simple question. I’m not going anywhere with him or the other two.

Shadows move through the alleyway. When one of them materializes at our side holding a gun to my head, Darius is left with no option but to release me.

His movements are brisk, exact and deadly.

A gun goes off. A runner crumples to the floor.

My ears ring from the force.
