“Ready?” I asked, meeting her gaze to make sure she was truly prepared for what lay ahead.

Sofia nodded, then sighed. “Alright. Let’s find out what she knows.”

We made our way up the stairs, filling the stairwell with the sound of our footsteps. Even though I was next to Sofia, I could feel the tension radiating off of her; it was palpable in the air around us. Finally, we reached her apartment door and she paused for a moment before opening it.

Victor was there waiting for us, his presence adding an extra layer of security. He gave us a nod before pointing us towards Sofia’s bedroom door. “She’s in there,” he said.

“How was the drive?”

“Fine,” he replied. “She was a little squirmy but you know.”

“Cool,” I said.

Sofia glared at me.

“I feel like she has something up her sleeve. Be careful,” he murmured in warning. I nodded. We all understood how serious this situation had become – a single mistake could mean disastrous consequences. Miranda might not have been able to physically overtake us, but she certainly could sic a legion of angry fans on us.

And bounty hunters.

Sofia opened the door and I followed behind her into the room. She seemed to be taking everything in stride; even in this dire situation, she managed to maintain her composure. It was surprising how quickly she had taken to this role.

We stepped further inside the room and suddenly Miranda came into view; she sat quietly on Sofia’s bed, waiting for her us. She was still bound, but Victor had slackened her ties.

“Hello again, Miranda,” Sofia said coolly, taking a seat in the chair across from her. “I hope you’re doing well.”

Miranda glared at her, but her voice was shaking as she spoke. “I’m not your enemy,” she said. “I just want to tell my story.”

“I know,” Sofia said. “And I’m here to listen. But first, I need to know who your source is.”

She looked up at me defiantly, a flicker of fear masked behind her eyes. “I already told you everything I know,” she said. “I don’t have any other answers.”

I raised an eyebrow at her, my nostrils flaring. “I find that hard to believe.”

“And why’s that?” she asked, her voice shaking slightly.

“Because you’re lying,” I replied, my tone unwavering. “You’ve been withholding information from us this entire time.”

Miranda’s face contorted into a look of confusion and fear. “What information?” she asked.

“You know exactly what information,” I growled at her, stepping closer towards her. “The name of your source.”

“All I know is in my messages and you already went through those, right?”

I took a deep breath and tried to calm down. I knew that getting angry wouldn’t help anything. “We found some interesting things in your messages, but they only lead us to dead ends. We need more information if we’re going to get to the bottom of this.”

Miranda looked at me, her eyes wide with fear. She was clearly starting to realize just how serious the situation was. “I don’t know what else to tell you,” she said, her voice trembling.

I leaned in close to her until our noses were almost touching. “You’re lying,” I said again, my breath hot on her face. “And I suggest you start telling us the truth before things get…unpleasant.”

I could see Sofia tense up next to me, but I ignored her. The truth was, I didn’t really want to hurt Miranda. But sometimes you had to play hardball if you wanted to get results.

“I swear, I don’t know anything else!” Miranda squealed.

I straightened up, running a hand through my hair as I tried to collect myself. Sofia shot me a warning glance, but I ignored her, still fuming. “Fine,” I spat out. “If that’s the way you want to play it, we can be just as ruthless as you.”

I stepped back from the bed and wiped my hands on my pants with a sense of finality. Miranda’s face fell as she realized the gravity of the situation.

Sofia held a hand up to stop me from walking toward her. My hand was already around the handle of my blade in my pocket.
