“People like Miranda thrive on causing pain,” Jace murmured, his voice steady and comforting. “But we won’t let her win, Sofia. We’ll fight her every step of the way.”

“I know I shouldn’t be letting her get to me, but this is so messed up.”

Victor scoffed from across the room. “Don’t apologize for feeling like shit over this. It’s fucked.”

“I just wish I could stop thinking about this for a second,” I replied. “It’s so overwhelming, and it’s all I can think about, and I...”

Jace and Victor exchanged a look for a split second, then Jace looked into my eyes. “Do you remember what you said when we were back in my apartment?”

I shook my head. “Vaguely,” I replied. “It all feels like it happened years ago.”

“You said you wanted a distraction. I can help you with a distraction,” he said, his voice breathy.

I looked up at Jace, meeting his gaze. There was something in his eyes that made me forget about everything else. It was like he was reading my mind, knowing exactly what I needed at that moment.

Victor laughed.

Jace ignored him and turned back to me, his fingers tracing circles on my arm. “I can take your mind off of everything for a little while,” he murmured, his breath ghosting over my ear.

I felt a shiver run down my spine at the sensation. I could feel Victor’s gaze on us, but he wasn’t stopping us. If anything, he seemed interested to see where this was going.

“Are you sure?” I asked, feeling a flutter of nerves in my stomach.

Jace leaned back slightly to look at me, his face serious but still laced with desire. “Do you trust me?”

I hesitated for a moment, but then nodded. “Yes,” I whispered.

“Good,” he said.

Then he kissed me.

Chapter Twenty: Jace

MygazelingeredonSofia as she sat beside me, her dark tear-filled eyes reflecting the internal struggle I was feeling. I felt like I was in limbo, suspended between two opposing forces – my loyalty to the Blades and my desire for her.

But she’d said Teo was okay with this.

And I believed her.

I finally decided that I needed to protect Sofia at all costs and leaned forward, pressing my lips against hers.

Her lips were soft and pliant under mine, and I deepened the kiss, exploring every inch of her mouth. She responded eagerly, her body trembling with desire against mine. I wrapped my arms around her waist, pulling her closer as Sofia ran her fingers through my hair.

“You might want to give us some space, Victor,” I said.

Sofia bit down on her lower lip. “Or he could stay and watch,” she replied.

Victor chuckled and leaned back in his seat, his gaze never leaving us. “I’m good either way,” he said. “Just let me know if you need any pointers.”

I flipped him off then focused on Sofia as I deepened the kiss even further. I couldn’t get enough of her, the taste of her lips driving me wild with desire. Her fingers tugged at my hair, pulling me closer as I explored every inch of her mouth. Finally, we broke the kiss, both gasping for air. Sofia’s eyes were dark with desire, and I could see the hunger in her gaze.

She grabbed this throw blanket that she had on the back of the couch and threw it over our laps, shielding us from Victor’s gaze. I chuckled, pulling back a little to look into her eyes.

“You’re sure about this?” I asked her, my fingers trailing down the side of her face. “I don’t want to push you into anything.”

Sofia nodded, a determined look in her eyes. “Push me? I’ve been wanting this for the longest time.”

“Okay,” I responded, leaning in to kiss her again. I pressed my lips against hers, the kiss deepening as I threaded my fingers in her hair, my free hand roaming down the front of her body. As I touched her, I felt her shiver and moan into my mouth. Her skin was smooth and warm under my fingertips. I wanted her so much.
