“Grayson, Sam, get ready!” I shouted over the sound of gunfire. “Sofia, stay down!”

With that, I slammed my foot down on the gas pedal and felt the SUV lurch forward towards the barricade. The sound of metal crunching and scraping against metal filled my ears as we collided head-on with one of the sedans, our car shuddering with impact.

“Fuck,” I cursed under my breath as bullets whizzed past our car. “Hold on tight!”

I swerved to avoid another sedan that was veering precariously towards us, my foot jamming on the accelerator as we plowed through the mud and trees.

As we made our escape, I could hear the sound of the sedans chasing us, their engines roaring like a pack of wolves. My heart was pounding in my chest as I swerved to avoid trees and debris, feeling the SUV bounce over the uneven terrain.

“Jace, come in,” Grayson said into his earpiece. “Come in. Are you guys good?”

There was nothing but static.

“Victor, come in,” Grayson said.

Again, nothing but static.

“What the hell,” I heard Sam mutter under his breath.

My grip on the wheel tightened as fear and anger swirled within me. If something had happened to Jace or Victor, I would make sure the people responsible would pay for it.

“We have movement up ahead,” Sofia said, her voice tense.

I peered through the windshield, quickly assessing the situation. A group of men blocked our path, their weapons raised and pointed in our direction.

“Well, they’re not in a car and we are, so let’s see what happens,” Grayson said.

“You’re fucking crazy,” Sam said.

Grayson laughed.

Crazy or not, I knew he was right. We had to try and get through them, even if it meant sacrificing our car. I took a deep breath and nodded at Grayson, who gave me a nod back.

“Everyone, hold on tight,” I said as I revved the engine once more.

With a roar of power, I slammed my foot down on the accelerator, the SUV charging towards the men with frightening speed. Bullets whizzed past us as we barreled towards them, but I didn’t flinch. My eyes were locked on the road ahead of us as we charged into the melee. The sound of metal crunching against metal filled my ears as we slammed into one of the men, sending him flying aside with a sickening thud.

I felt the SUV jolt as we collided with something else, but kept driving forward. Grayson was shouting out directions from the backseat, his voice steady and calm despite the chaos around us.

Sam was right. He was fucking crazy. I was just really glad he was on our side.

As we passed through the group of men, their yells and screams echoed in our wake. The SUV lurched and bounced over the rough terrain, but I kept my foot on the accelerator, determined to put as much distance between us and our attackers as possible.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, we reached a clearing in the forest. I brought the SUV to a stop and quickly turned to Sofia. “Are you okay? Did they hurt you?”

Sofia looked up at me. She looked pale, her eyes wide. Her breath trembled with fear. “I think I’m okay. Is everyone else okay?”

“I’m fine,” I replied. “How are you two back there?”

Grayson answered. “Shaken, but okay,” he said. “You alright, Sam?”

“I mean I’m shitting myself, but I’m fine,” he replied.

I let out a chuckle, relieved that everyone was at least physically unscathed. But this was bad. Really bad.

“Did you see their SUV?” I asked Grayson.

Grayson shook his head. “No, I lost them some time during the gunfight,” he replied, looking down at the phone he held in his hand. “And I can’t see their location on my phone.”
