My hands shook as I spoke, the images of that horrific moment flashing through my mind. I had never felt so powerless in my life. “I tried to shoot at our attacker but the car was fast and I was...you know, I was in the passenger seat, and suddenly the air bag was going off in front of my face.”

Grayson’s expression was dark. “Whoever did this is going to pay,” he said, his voice laced with anger. “We’ll find them.”

I nodded, my own rage boiling inside of me. These people had hurt my team, hurt my family, and they were going to pay dearly for it. I could feel a deep thirst for revenge filling up inside of me, consuming every fiber of my being. Whoever these people were, they wouldn’t get away with what they had done. Not if I had anything to say about it.

“What about Sofia?” Sam asked. “I’m really worried about her.”

“Teo won’t let anything happen to her,” Grayson said. “I promise you he’s in good hands.”

“Weirdly, it’s not him I’m worried about,” Sam said. “How did I let you guys talk me into this?”

“It was either this or staying back in Orlando and that wasn’t really an option either,” I replied.

“Hopefully we’ll hear from them soon,” Grayson added.

Sam groaned in frustration. “This fucking sucks,” he said. “And Victor was in really bad shape.”

“Yeah,” Grayson said.

There was nothing else to say to that, so we just waited. The sound of hushed whispers and hurried footsteps echoed through the hospital corridor as I leaned my head against the wall, my heart pounding in my chest. The sterile scent of disinfectant invaded my nostrils.

After what felt like a very long time, a doctor approached our little group, her somber expression doing nothing to ease my anxiety. We all straightened up. I could see Sam and Grayson’s expressions hardening as they braced themselves for whatever news awaited them.

For whatever news awaited us.

“You’re here with Victor Santiago, right?” she said, her voice soft. She was wearing a blue hijab that matched her scrubs.

We all nodded.

“I’m Doctor Saba,” she said, introducing herself. “Victor is in critical condition. He lost a lot of blood and suffered multiple fractures. We managed to stabilize him for now but he has to undergo surgery immediately if he stands any chance of surviving.”

“What kind of fractures?” Grayson interjected.

“Multiple ribs, a broken wrist and ankle,” Dr. Saba replied, her eyes meeting ours. “There’s internal bleeding as well and we have to operate on him as soon as possible.”

“Can we see him?” I asked.

Dr. Saba nodded. “We’ll be taking him into surgery now but you can see him before we take him in,” she said. “But only for a few moments.”

We followed her down the hall towards where Victor was being prepared for surgery. They had sedated him so his eyes were unfocused and his breathing was shallow. My heart ached at the sight of him. He was always so strong, so capable, and seeing him like this made me feel powerless.

“Sofia would freak out if she saw him like this,” Grayson said. “So I guess just be glad she isn’t here.”

I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of guilt at Grayson’s words. If only I had been there to protect Victor, maybe this wouldn’t have happened. But I knew I couldn’t dwell on that now. We had to focus on his recovery and finding out who was responsible for this.

“Will he be okay?” Sam asked the doctor.

Dr. Saba took a second to answer.

“We won’t know for sure until after the surgery,” she said gravely. “But I can assure you that we’ll do everything we can to save him.”

I felt a lump form in my throat as we were ushered out of the room. The harsh glare of the fluorescent lights only added to the tension and unease that hung thick in the air. As we walked back to the waiting area, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of dread wash over me. Victor was in critical condition, and it was uncertain whether he would make it through this.

“We have to find out who did this,” Grayson said, his voice low and fierce. It didn’t matter that the doctor was right there. This was too important to wait.

“I agree,” Sam said. “And fast.”

I nodded in agreement, my mind already whirling with possibilities.
