“Must be nice to be able to come and go when you please,” Virginia sneers from the doorway of the kitchen as she drags her suitcase over.

Virginia is a teenage girl through and through. She was a teenager before she was a toddler. But the last couple of years have been tough with her, she doesn’t really let anyone in and it’s hard to be the big brother she needs when she doesn’t want it. It does make me a little upset that I don’t have as close of a relationship with her as I’d like. But there’s only so much I can do.

She glares at me behind big, deep brown eyes that match her hair and I shake off her mean-mug with a chuckle.

“Don’t be rude to your brother, Virginia,” my mom says to her calmly.

“Ha. You’re one to talk.” Ginny rolls her eyes at my mom before running out of the kitchen.

“What’s wrong with her?” I ask.

“Just being a teenager,” my mom defends. “You were one too, ya know.” She reaches in to hug me before walking out after my sister. “Don’t forget to call us!” she yells back before she’s fully disappeared.

“Son?” my dad calls at me as I’m walking to head out of the kitchen. He coughs, trying to be quiet about it, but instead it comes out harsh. “Don’t forget about the annual auction gala coming up,” he says after recovering from his cough attack. We lightly dance around the fact that he seems to be getting worse. Cancer isn’t a subject we’re used to in the house. And I honestly don’t know how to approach it, so I don’t.

“Next weekend,” I add on, reminding him that I’m fully aware of all business events.

“I won’t be able to make it, for obvious reasons, so you’ll need to find someone else from the dealership to go with you. Maybe your new assistant.” He sits back down in his chair, needing to catch his breath. The thought hadn’t crossed my mind, but it would make sense to have Sterling tag along, that’s what assistants do. I was originally planning to bring Jax. But I love the thought of walking into the gala with Sterling by my side.

“Don’t forget how important this event is,” he reminds me before leaving the kitchen.

“I know, dad.”

I let out a heavy sigh of relief as I pull into the parking garage of my penthouse apartment. Set in the heart of a small downtown city, the building itself is twenty stories high and my place takes up the entire twentieth floor. The view is beautiful, one side boasts a picturesque view of the mountains while the other side faces the rest of the city.

My phone rings in my pocket, a text message from an unknown number.

Is this Callan?

I roll my eyes because it’s probably a booty call, and I don’t have time for that shit. Then again, it has been a few months since I’ve gotten any action. I’ve been so busy focusing on the company throughout the holidays. Maybe I can make time. The phone pings again, and another message comes through.

I mean Mr. David, sorry. It’s Sterling.

Suddenly my blood rushes to my head, and I don’t know why.

Yes, what can I do for you Miss Cooper?

I type back. I immediately see that she’s typing out a response, three dots motioning to prove it. And then it stops, but no message comes through. I don’t normally feel let down when a girl doesn’t respond but I was anticipating her next message.

And then, she’s typing again.

I have a question about the job.

My fingers tap along the screen, curious what her question could be.

Ask.

I add her contact to my phone while she types out her next message.

It’s a stupid question.

Jesus, woman. Just spit it out. I think to myself.

I’ll be the judge of that.

The three dots dance again.

What exactly do I need to wear? I see that there’s a uniform requirement for employees, but nothing specific to assistants. I just wanted to check in and make sure I’m dressed appropriately.
