“Miss Cooper, I’ll need to take off a bit earlier than usual. Seems my movers forgot to obtain a signature from me the other day. You’re free to take off as well, seeing as we’ve done all we can do today.”

“That’s fine. I can just tour the dealership a bit more and get to know some of the workers while I wait for my friend to pick me up.” She leans over the chair to pick up her bag.

Ever since the situation earlier with Jax, I’ve been forcing my mind to stay focused and professional. As attractive as this girl is, she is my business partner. And that’s all she ever will be.

I scribble a signature on the invoices from the moving company and thank them for waiting on me. Once they leave, I take a massive sigh and slowly pace around the kitchen as I take in the view. The sun sets over the city skyline with the Rocky Mountains in the distance. I can see people starting to fill the streets below and think about how long it’s been since I’ve been out.

I know I don’t gain much from going out but being cooped up in here where all I can seem to think about is my new assistant is probably not the best idea for the night. While I did a better job maintaining my thoughts and ideas of her earlier at work, it’s different now.

Sterling Cooper. What is it about this girl?I’d caught myself in a trance earlier, watching her closely, catching every little quirky thing she does. Her movements and gestures, how her lips move when she talks, the way her eyes drop when she's nervous, how her hips sway when she walks. These are not thoughts a CEO should have about his employee. And a younger woman at that. She has to be at least twenty-five. Young enough to be fun and flirty but old enough to have a maturity about her.

It’s been a whole fucking day, for crying out loud.

I need to clear my head, so I opt to go down to the small dive bar tucked around the corner a couple blocks from my building.

On my walk there, I pass by a group of already wasted twenty-something's celebrating their friend’s bachelorette party, which is weird considering it’s only Monday evening. A few of them turn their attention to me, attempting to flirt but it’s not worth my energy, so I keep moving forward.

I turn the corner and head into the bar. It smells good. Like cigars and bourbon. I walk straight to the bar and pull out a stool.

“What can I get you, handsome?” A young brunette stations herself in front of me, pink lips, small perky tits that she obviously is trying to display, and brown eyes.

“Whiskey neat.” She turns around to pour my drink.

I take the time to think through some thoughts I have. Mostly about my first big sponsor event coming up and how hard it’s going to be to be so close to Sterling without losing my cool. Thankfully, that’s still five days away so maybe I can get my shit together before then.

But I can’t help but notice how often I seem to be thinking about her. It’s annoying really.

The bartender hands me the drink and asks if I’d like to order food. I shake my head and she walks away.

As I bring the glass to my mouth and let the whiskey burn down my throat, a few other things cross my mind. Like the fact that my dad has cancer and not a single person wants to talk about it. How I’m running a multi-billion-dollar car company but I’m not sure what comes after, or if this is even my dream. How comfortable I’ve gotten living this lifestyle I’ve grown so accustomed to.

I take another swig from my glass as I hear laughter from behind me. I look over to see a couple of girls walking into the bar from the street. I have to do a double take and almost fucking choke when I see her.Like I conjured her up. Her arm is linked with another girl’s as they smile and talk while finding a seat at a nearby booth. You have got to be fucking kidding me.

I turn my back to them as quickly as possible, not wanting them to notice me.

I hear her voice; her sultry, soft voice. It reverberates from her table all the way to my ears, and it quickly travels down in vibrations to my dick. This is not good.

Her friend breaks the silence with a laugh and I can hear her whisper, “Go say something to him,” as she nudges her in the shoulder. I take this moment to quickly close out my tab, toss back the last of my drink and start walking out of the bar.

“Callan?” I hear her voice call out to me as I’m trying to sneak out the door.Of course, she’d notice you, dumbass.

I turn around to face her and her red-headed friend. She gets up from her seat and walks my way.

“I’m sorry. Mr. David,” she corrects. “What are you doing here?” she asks, seeming pretty uncomfortable, as she gets up from her seat and closes the space between us. I look over her shoulder at her friend who seems to be gawking at us.

She’s changed her outfit since work. She’s wearing a jean skirt, frayed at the hem, with an oversized sweatshirt that reads Colorado with mountains behind the lettering. She has the sweatshirt tucked up under her bra and a small sliver of her stomach peeks through. My fucking mouth waters. Like I’m a predator hungry for its prey.I’m fucked.

“Just grabbing a quick drink,” I answer nonchalantly. “But what areyoudoing here?” I question, looking over her head at the table where her friend sits, to see she’s still intently eyeing us. That’s when I notice that Sterling is about a foot shorter than I am.

“This place has the best pizza,” she responds, almost discreetly, like it’s a secret that this place serves the best pizza.

“You look too young to be at a bar, Miss Cooper.” I purposefully speak a little too loudly and the waitress glances over in our direction out of interest. I thrive in seeing Sterling squirm at the embarrassment in my overreach.

“I’m twenty-two,” she defends as she rolls her eyes at me. “I’ll be twenty-three in August,” she quips.

I do the math. She’s younger than I initially thought, which surprises me. That’s almost a nine-year difference considering my thirty-first birthday is coming up.

“Anyway...if you’re done questioning me-”
