I don’t know if I'm just reading into things, but I definitely feel like everything he’s saying is a double entendre. Waves of need wash over me as his eyes burn into me, the purposeful pursuit they make from my thighs to my chest. Is he checking me out?

I don’t do relationships. His words keep playing in my head. Yet, I feel like everything else out of his mouth means the opposite. Then I remember the story Dakota told me.He’s a player. That explains it. I just have to muster up enough courage to ignore his flirtatious ways and I’ll be fine. He’s a player. He’s your boss. And he’s off limits.

But my God, is he so damn attractive.

He chuckles as he finishes packing up his tools and closing down the shop. “Let me show you to your new office. We are very behind on the day as it is, due to your inability to be on time.” He glances at me, but I can tell he’s being playful. “It doesn’t help that I’m going to be gone for a few days. And I have some paperwork that is fairly overdue that I’ll need you to take care of.”

“Did you say you’re gonna be gone?” I look at him as we walk side by side. I can tell he’s annoyed thinking that’s the only thing I heard from everything he said.

But I did hear what he said, all of it. Even the part about me having my own office. Which is nice. But he’s leaving? I hate to admit that my heart took a small dive when I heard him say that.

“Yes, Sterling. I have an important business trip, Jax and I are meeting with the owner of the lot for our potential new location in Los Angeles. Now, walk faster please so we can get started on the day.”

“So bossy today,” I remark with a sassy smirk curled on my lips, though I feel rather disappointed that I won’t see him for the rest of the week. “Besides, if you’re talking about the stack of papers that was on your desk, it’s already taken care of,” I add in.

Callan stops dead in his tracks and stares at me.

“You did what?” he asks.

“I took care of the filing. Was that not okay?” Suddenly, I start to worry. Thinking maybe I wasn’t supposed to take on tasks without permission, or maybe, I filed the wrong papers.

“No. I mean, yeah. That’s fine. That’s what you were doing for the past hour?” Callan’s amber eyes melt into me like molasses, hot and sticky. The way he’s eyeing me right now does things to my body that I can’t explain, nor do I want to. It’s too much.

“Yeah. I saw it needed to be taken care of, so I took it upon myself. I am your assistant after all. I don’t need to be asked to do my job, Mr. David.” I turn back around and continue walking, desperately wanting – no,needing– to escape the way his eyes make me feel. His footsteps pick up behind me as I lead him back into the dealership.

“How was work?” Dakota is actually home for once as I walk through the door. I look around to see if her boyfriend is also here, but it seems she’s here alone. I hate to admit it but I’m kind of happy about that.

“Work was…interesting.” I smirk to myself not wanting her to sense my amusement.

“Do tell.” She turns from the washing machine and looks my way.

“I just learned a lot more about, I mean from Callan today, and he gave me my own office.” I throw my purse onto the kitchen table and take a seat. Dakota gives methe eye,but I choose not to elaborate. Whatever this feeling is, needs to go away, so I might as well shut it down on all fronts before it gets out of hand.

But Dakota sees right past the bullshit. She’s always been able to read people easily.

“Are you crushing on your boss, Sterls?” Dakota follows me over to the table and sits across from me.

“How did you extract that from what I just told you?” I roll my eyes and she looks at me like I’m avoiding the question, which I am. She glares at me behind a knowing smile.

“I wouldn’t call it a crush.” I lie, because it definitely feels like I may have a tiny crush on Callan. “He’s just really nice to look at and has this magnetic air about him. I’m sure all of the employees feel charmed by him.” And maybe it’s been a while since I’ve flirted, so it’s easy for me to get a little giddy in front of someone as hot as Callan, but I don’t plan on telling her that.

“Well, I guess there’s no harm in getting to know him,” she says as she starts the dryer.

“Actually, he’s got this strict no dating rule,” I counter.

“I said get to know him, not date or fuck him. But there’s that too.” We both chuckle.

Thankfully, he’ll be out of town for the next few days for a business meeting, so I can find time to focus and breathe. I do not need this kind of distraction right now. I need to get my shit together.

“Just be careful with that man. Like I’ve said, I heard he’s a hit and run type of guy and I really don’t think you need that in your life right now.” She doesn’t hesitate to bring out her mom-tone with me. I give her an understanding smile, with as little sarcasm as possible, hoping to move on to another topic.

“You know you’ve been acting a bit differently these past few weeks.” she states.

“You’re not wrong. I feel like I don’t even know who I am at this point. My whole life got flipped on its axis and then there’s Callan and his stupid perfect body. I open my mouth and don’t know what’s about to come out. It’s confusing as heck.” My admission surprises me. We both know that there’s something off about me.

“Men and their hot bodies.” She rolls her eyes.

“The audacity.” We laugh, and it feels good. I love having someone I can banter with about shit that may be too irrelevant to even be true, but life can be that way sometimes.
