God killers,Cronus mused, like he knew exactly what I thought. He probably did.Not titan killers.

Tears burned my eyes, slipping down my bloody cheek as I twisted the blade again, desperate, shaking. I had nothing left, no last-minute tricks.

Nothing would kill him. He was truly, horrifically invincible.

I'd really believed my daggers would kill him when they absorbed the hippocampi's curses. From the second they lit up red, I thought they'd be his downfall.God-killers, not titan-killers.My heart crashed, tears flowing faster. I wanted to be strong and defiant until the end, but there was nothing to stop him devouring me, swallowing my power, and growing even more horrific.

He lifted me higher, his cruel mouth wide.

My heart stopped for a long beat.

The edges of his maw curled into a smirk and hate poured through my heart. All I'd ever wanted was to be happy with my mates, live a quiet life, maybe have a bar fight on the weekend, but no world-changing events, no life-or-death battles every other day. Why did Cronus get everything he wanted, but I didn't get to keep a single thing I'd dreamed of?

"Fuck you," I spat, staring into the pure void of his mouth.

I matched his smirk with the last bit of my strength and flipped my dagger until it pointed towards me.You don’t get to have this too, asshole.

I didn’t hesitate, driving the long dagger into my stomach so hard I screamed myself hoarse.

The pain was so muchbiggerthan I expected, voracious as it spread to every part of me, agony howling through my middle.

Light filled my vision. I screwed my eyes shut to escape it. Screaming through gritted teeth, I threw my body onto the blade until I was fully impaled, until I was surely dead.

I get the final laugh. You can't devour my power if I don't have any.

The victory lasted about as long as Cronus's roar of fury. He ripped me away from his unnatural face and stared at what I'd done. His face twisted, uglier than ever, the veil of blue magic billowing on his skin.

Yeah, asshole.Ikilled me. You’re too fucking late. I win.

But the pain tore through my stomach, so bad that I couldn’t think, couldn’t do anything but cry. This wasn’t bruises or broken bones; this was a slow, draining death. I should've aimed higher and hacked my head off. Not sure I had the nerve for that one, though.

Blood seeped out of me, hot and slick, and all my bravado and strength seemed to flee with it. Oh gods, I’d killed myself. I really stabbed myself in the stomach.

Weakness spread, leaching all sensation from me until the only thing I could feel was the hot throb in my stomach. My other knife slid from numb fingers, falling far below, and I went limp in Cronus's hand.

Spiteful little bitch,he snarled, making me cry harder as his voice tore apart anything left holding me together.

He pinched the dagger's hilt between his giant fingers and ripped it out, my answering scream so loud and violent that my voice gave out.

You think this will save them? I'll devour every one of your mates until there's no trace of you left behind.

My head spun, my body heavy and rife with pain. Cronus was angry—furious. It took me a moment for my sluggish brain to sort through his words and realise why my blades were glowing brighter than ever.

I'd stabbed myself right where my curse mark scrolled across my torso.

I broke the hippocampi's curse using these knives. Did I … break the last curse, forcing me to murder my mates? Did I break theirs, too?

My thoughts grew sluggish. Pain and peace merged in my body.I did it. I broke our curse. And … I was dying.

I didn’t want to die.

I wouldn't get to spend the rest of my life with my mates, wouldn't get to rebuild our house near the Forest of Halwen.

But Cronus didn't get to steal my magic. He didn't get to take anything from me ever again.

The peace began to swallow the pain, until I couldn't feel the cruel fingers crushing me, or hear the horrible rattling sound in my throat, only a distant roar of agony and grief I could've sworn belonged to Emlyn.

Fine,Cronus seethed,you win, Halwen Vakhara.
