“Maybe,” I said and stirred. Still, how could no one know a damn thing? How had Hendrix pulled it off?

“Thank you for your help,” Kir said and clapped me on the shoulder. “See you.”

“Be careful,” I called after him and the massive Russian gave me a thumbs-up. No wonder him and my cousin Luca got along so well.

Pulling out my phone, I saw that I had no missed calls. Not even a text. My mood soured even more. I’d at least expected Ty to send me something, but he’d been radio silent.

As for Sara—I tried to call her again and this time it went straight to voicemail. My jaw gritted as I was certain she was ignoring my calls. At least she hadn’t blocked me yet—probably knowing that I’d hack her phone and unblock myself.

But why wasn’t she answering? Was she covering for Lia?

I tried to think back to our drive home the other day. It had been quiet—I’d been lost in thought and trying not to pretend like the brilliant smile she’d tossed my way as I’d helped her down Ty’s icy front steps hadn’t gutted me. I’d known it was for Lia’s benefit, not for mine, as Lia had been watching us like a friendly hawk.

We hadn’t fought on the way home, things had been polite and pleasant, even if we hadn’t talked much. We’d both been quiet. I knew that she hadn’t forgiven me, but I thought we were at least on speaking terms. Maybe that was also for Lia’s benefit.

Getting down, I walked the several blocks to where I’d left my car, noting that it was already getting dark. I was running out of time to get answers. The visit to theSons of Celtbar hadn’t been particularly illuminating, but I also hadn’t sensed any hostility. Ty had also given me the all-clear to let them know that the cop was handled, and the information was safe.

“We suspected as much,” Niall McCaugry had said dryly. “No one’s ass was in jail.” Niall was the second-hand of the gang and he’d given me a serious look. “But we know we owe you. Thanks. Call it in anytime.”

I’d nodded and headed out, knowing that the boss, Liam that shit was well above my pay grade.

In my car, I wondered if it was worth visiting Mickey Weiss. Was I pushing it by visiting the cop without Ty’s knowing? How pissed would he be?

I blew air into one cheek, debating and drumming my fingers on the wheel. Then I snatched up my phone and called him. And the shithead sent me to voicemail.

Busy.Came the curt text.

Anger roiled in my chest and again, I pictured Lia standing in the doorway of Ty’s office, her golden hair messy, her posture demure, and her eyes shadowed. How my cousin had gone from seething and panicking to absolutely weak with relief. He couldn’t even hide it anymore.

He’s so gone on her.

And then I pictured the laughing woman at breakfast, the woman who’d been lively company on the drive to Mickey, and then the crushed, hollowed-eyed wraith who came stumbling out of his room.

A suspicion suddenly flashed through my head and my hands went tight on the wheel. We knew that Mickey Weiss had been Lia’s mother’s partner, I had all that information stored on my computer at home. What if he’d said some weird shit about that? What if he had Lia second-guessing?

What if she’s thinking about selling us out to the Feds? Or BPD?

My heart began to pound faster, and I threw my car into gear, bombing through the city to get to the hospital. I whipped intothe garage and parked in a reserved spot without giving a shit. Let them ticket me.

Hauling ass inside, I slowed as I approached the visitor’s station and skirted by it with ease. I got up to Mickey’s floor on the slowest elevator known to man, and then hustled down the hall. As I reached his door, my pocket began buzzing and I went to silent it, then cursed. It could be one of the guys or Slinky or—

“Sara.”

CHAPTER TWENTY

Daniel

Iducked around the corner, slipped into a storage closet, and answered right before it went to voicemail. “Thanks for finally calling me back. Truly, I’m honored.”

“I’ve been busy, asshat,” Sara snapped back, and I could hear the tinny sound of wind. I pictured her outside, hustling along, tucked into her coat, and her eyes filling with irritated fire. “It’s finals in a few weeks and I have a major project at work. I know you think the world revolves around your bullshit crime family—”

“One that Lia is a part of,” I interjected, just to be snide.

Sara growled. “Did you call me just to piss me off?”

“No,” I said with a sigh and rubbed my forehead. “I need to know what was up with Lia yesterday. Did she seem off to you?”

“Off—when? What are you talking about?”
