It will never be enough,I thought. Two days wasn’t enough.

We play-fought and kissed in the bed, then I rolled her over onto her stomach and yanked her back against me, sliding in.

“I hate you,” she cried between moans.

“I know,” I said, my jaw clenched as I fucked her harder. “I hate you, too. I wish I never met you. I wish I didn’t know that you existed. But I will ruin you.”

“Like hell you will.”

And in the end, Sara was right—I didn’t ruin her. Not like I ruined myself, because I was right about the two days. It wasn’t enough time.

But after two days, Sara knew not to test me ever again.

“So, this is really it?” She asked, her face tear-stained, as we stood on the cold street, dawn glowing like a red ember in the east. I gave a curt nod and checked my phone. Where the hell was the driver? “We have amazing sex for days and now you wake me and kick me to the curb?”

“Yes, exactly,” I said.

“Don’t do this, Danny,” Sara said. “Can’t we talk?”

My gut clenched. Sara had taken the few rests and moments that we hadn’t been all over each other to try and talk to me. To reason with me. I’d shut her down every time and every time I saw her hope in me crumble a little bit more.

And it hurt. It hurt like shattering my frozen heart to pieces over and over again on the fucking pavement.

“Don’t ever come back here, Sara,” I said. “If we meet in passing, we can act friendly. But no one can ever know about this.” I looked at her. “No one can know what—”

No one can know what you mean to me.

“Don’t want to get into trouble?” She snarked at me.

“No,” I said and brushed her hair off her face. She jerked back, her eyes filled with a clash of fury and longing. “No one would ever respect you again if they knew that you let a demon like me ruin you. They also wouldn’t believe it—but then again, I have photographic evidence.”

Sara sucked in a breath, real hurt and fear filling her face. “Danny—what the hell is that supposed to mean?”

I tucked my hands into my pockets, hating myself for what I was about to do. But I’d woken up this morning with the plan, as though someone had laid it out perfectly for me.

“It means I know you Sara,” I said, feeling as though I’d rehearsed this a thousand times and tried to stop myself each one. I had the sense of falling and falling, the world far away and even waking up with Sara last night, gazing at her, having in her in my arms felt surreal. Like it had happened to someone else. “I know that you’ll try to find a way tosaveme from myself.” I edged my words with the perfect amount of delicate scorn that would flay Sara open. “I know that you might even try to blackmail me, try to find all sorts of ways to convinceme.” I stared her down as her lips trembled. “You don’t go down without a fight.”

Sara stared at me as though she’d never seen me before and I could see that she was figuring it out, that her heart was breaking—but she still refused to believe it.

I stepped closer and grinned down at her, a demon’s grin, my father’s grin, and Sara jerked away, but I caught her.

“I made sure that I had everything I needed to keep you in your place—from the first night you came back here. From the first time you tried to fuck me over, not ever thinking that I already had leverage.”

“You wouldn’t,” Sara said in a broken voice.

“Try me, little girl,” I said with a sneer, and I wanted to throw up at the revulsion in her eyes, the disbelief, and the raw agony. “You come near my operation, you try to mess with me, I’ll give youonewarning, and then—everyone gets to see what your pretty pussy looks like.”

Sara jerked free and slapped me across the face. The sting caused my eyes to water, and I staggered to the side, gasping and laughing.

“Now you get it,” I said and tugged on my jaw. “Honestly, Sara, it seems selfish to keep it all to myself.”

“Fuck you, Daniel Michaelson,” Sara whispered. “Don’t youever, ever come near me again.”

“Oh, sweetheart, we’ll have to be in each other’s orbit,” I said with a brittle laugh. “We’re going to have play nice for my cousin and your best friend. Sorry. I promise to make it easy on you.”

“So, this is your gambit, huh?” Sara spat. “This is thedemon.I’m not impressed.”

“Good,” I said mildly and finally, finally, I saw the car.
