I heard Sal let out a yelp of fear, then a roar of pain as a gunshot went off. “My hand, you fucking, no, no, do you know who I am—” It was cut off as another gunshot went off and I heard the sickening thump of a body.
CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

“Acoward,” Danny said quietly, in answer to Sal’s final question.
My knees almost gave out as the air seemed to lighten, the shadows fleeing, and tears burned in my eyes. All I could think was—Danny is free.
I tried to move around him, but Danny smoothly blocked me and suddenly Ty was there, his face set and drawn as he pulled me away. “What the hell are you doing here?”
“Providing backup to Kir,” Ty said, his voice shaking, and I glanced up to the roof where I saw Kir polishing a familiar white gun on his jacket—Danny’s gun, that I’d seen once. “And having a heart attack—you fuckingpazzoide.I cannot believe you went inalone.”
“I knew Kir would come,” Danny said. “Thanks, by the way. But I did say that I’d be happy to take that head shot.”
“You’re welcome,” Kir said, and he swung down the building with ease, clambering from window to drainpipe to the ground as though a ninja. “And I don’t recall that, do you, Ty?”
Ty was putting a hand on my shoulder, and I looked up at him, taking in his stricken face. But there was a cold light dancing in his eyes for all that.
“I don’t know, I’ve been out of the game for a minute.”
Kir shrugged and let out a sharp whistle, guys appearing around the corners, with bags and other equipment. “Come on.”
“Kir, seriously, what the fuck was that,” Danny said, as though snapping back into his usual mobster mode.
“I had a blood debt to settle,” Kir said as we rounded the corner, and he spun Danny’s gun in his hand.
“Lia settled that,” Danny said through gritted teeth. “Two and half years ago.”
“Ah, then you now owe me.”
We all halted in the shadowed alley, the long grass whispering against the brick, and Danny went rigid, then slowly movedin front of me. Ty and Kir glanced at each other and then turned to face us; their muscular arms folded. There was an old, wicked glint in Ty’s eyes, and Kir seemed to radiate with unholy amusement.
For a split second, surrounded by three dangerous, muscular mobsters, the adrenaline of the day supplied a dark, twisted fantasy—Kir grabbing my hair and fucking my face while Daniel fucked my pussy. A ripple went over me, and I shook my head, but when I caught Kir’s eye, the green glinted, as though he knew exactly what I’d been thinking about and was happy to oblige sometime.
Jesus, I’m a mess.I shivered and Danny wrapped an arm tight around me.
“What is this?” Danny asked.
Kir cocked his head to the side and gave him a slow smile. “You owe me for saving your life—but even more, her life. And for eliminating the threat to your power.”
Danny huffed a laugh, and I watched him glance between his shadowconsigliereand cousin. There was a quiet, tense moment, then he said, “You played me.”
“I warned you, cousin,” Ty said. “We had a deal, and you broke it.” I glanced at Danny, whose face had gone still. “You promised you’d get out in two years.”
“And I’ve never been interested in beingconsigliereforever, Daniel,” Kir added.
“I can’t believe this,” Danny muttered.
“Sometimes you’re too smart for your own good,” I couldn’t help but say and he looked down at me. I smiled and tried to speak, but suddenly, he kissed me—hard, and I swore I saw fireworks pinwheeling when he pulled away.
“So, what do you want?” Danny said in a smooth tone, as though he hadn’t just made me come undone with one kiss. Again, I shivered, as though my body was desperate for his touch, and the realization hitting hard that this was the first time in two and a half years that we’d been so close. That we were touching.
“I want you to be boss, of course,” Kir said with such arrogance that I scowled at him. He winked at me. “And I want you to retire.”
I sucked in a breath, hope rushing through me so fast that I felt dizzy, even as I sensed Danny’s surprise and—relief. Profound, earthshakingrelief.
Oh, Danny.
