“Because we were under the water for a long time. Way longer than either of us should have been able to survive down there.”

“Then how did we?”

“I saved us. My magic activated and I shared my breath with you.”

“In a kiss,” she whispers, turning ashen.

“You do remember?”

“I’ve been having dreams. Sometimes nightmares.”

“That one was real.”

“Does that mean they all were?”

“I don’t know. But it’s something we can explore. But I need to tell you something else.”

“Go on,” she says, full of tension and apprehension.

“When we got to shore, you freaked out.Understandably. And took off in the prof’s golf cart. You, umm, crashed and wrapped it around a tree.”

“There was something in the road.” She screws her face up in concentration and then winces. “I don’t remember what, but it scared me.”

“You were unconscious when I found you and when the guys arrived I begged Reef to help me. I just wanted to take your fear away.”

“How can Reef help me? He’s not really a doctor.”

“Reef has magic too.”

“Reef?”

“He can alter people’s memories.”

Understanding dawns on her face and morphs to anger.

“You stole my memories!”

“I’m sorry.”

“How many times?” she demands.

“What?”

“You heard me! How many times did you…assault me like that?”

“More than once. I’m sorry. We were just trying to protect you, Malia.”

“I didn’t ask you to!” she screams, jumping to her feet. “I want to go home.”

“Mai-tai, please—”

“Don’t call me that!” she snaps. “Has everything been a lie?”

“No! Absolutely not. I swear. There’s more to explain. It will all make sense. If you’ll just listen—”

“How can there be more? What could you possibly say that will make what you’ve done to me okay?”

“Please. I’m messing this up. Just listen to the others, okay? Please?”
