“One of our officers will be with you in a moment and they’ll explain everything.”

The door to one of the other interview rooms opens, and Detective Payne walks out, a sickening smile on his face that kicks my flight or fight instinct up a notch. I tremble all over, and if it wasn’t for Bhodi holding me in such a strong grip, I think I’d fall.

“Malia?” Payne says, coming to stand before me. “We have an eye witness who has come forward and who can place you at the scene of the crime for all of the murders and disappearances in question.”

“It’s not possible. Who is it?” Cove demands.

“We’re not at liberty to say. Miss Van der Zee? This way please.” He turns away, expecting me to follow, but I’m frozen to the spot.

“That’s not where I came from,” I blurt out.

“No. This will lead you to the holding cells.”

“Cells? Why? Are you charging me?” My eyes are like saucers, betraying my fear. Payne smiles, feeding off of it.

“In due course, miss. But yes, in light of this new evidence, you will be processed and charged with several murders.”

“Malia!” A familiar voice, but more shrill and desperate than I’ve ever heard, calls my name.

Slowly, like my brain is trying to protect and stop me, my body turns in the direction the sound came from.

“I’m so sorry, Malia,” the person cries, sounding absolutely distraught. “I didn’t have a choice. I had to tell them!”

I can’t see who’s speaking though because the officer with them is blocking my view. I hear them break down in tears and I stare in bewilderment. The officer shifts and I’m left looking at the eyewitness who has just condemned my fate.

Summer.

The End…
