As he starts the car, a strange mixture of anxiety and curiosity churns within me. I know I’m in a precarious situation, but there’s something about Don’s protective demeanour that makes me trust him, despite the unconventional circumstances.

We drive in silence for a while, my mind racing with questions and uncertainty. I steal occasional glances at Don, his hands now gripping the steering wheel with a more controlled strength, the remnants of his earlier anger subsiding. There’s an undeniable attraction in the way he carries himself, and even in this chaos, I find myself drawn to him. Wishing for a repeat of that night.

But I can’t go there. We can’t. He’s my boss and now I’m going to be living with him for the foreseeable future. There’s new lines drawn in the sand that we can’t afford to cross.

Finally, we arrive at the secluded house where I had my interview. Don parks the car and turns to me with a reassuring smile. “We’re here, Sugar. Welcome to our little sanctuary.”

WINT

I stare in dismay at the report in my lap. It’s Candy’s background check, and it’s…perplexing. I hate mysteries, and it looks like that’s exactly what Candy Grace Canse is. For now. I never let a puzzle get the better of me, and I don’t intend to start with her.

I’m distracted from the gaps in Candy’s history by my phone ringing, and I hit answer without checking the caller ID.

“Just a head’s up,” North’s low gravelly voice comes down the line, tinged with stress. “Don’s bringing Candy to the house. She’s going to be staying for a while.”

“The fuck?”

We never bring people to the house. Ever. The only exception to that rule was when I fucked up by bringing Candy here to interview.

“Apparently there’s been some vandalism at her place and the place that she’s staying.” My mind is blown. What the hell is going on? “Oh and Don said you should check out her friend. Apparently she’s applied for membership at For Me.”

“We’ve had over one hundred applications this week alone. Is there a name to go off?”

“Don said she was fit.”

“They’re all fit,” I groan.

“Don reckons she’s a virgin. Or incredibly inexperienced at least.”

“You don’t say.”

“He’s rarely wrong about these things. It’s a gift,” North says with a chuckle.

“Okay so look out for a fit virgin on the application form. Got it.”

“To be fair, Don will be back with Candy in about twenty minutes, you could just ask her.”

“I don’t want her to know we’re doing this.”

“Okay, your choice. Just keep me in the loop.”

“Will do. Are the rest of you guys coming home anytime soon?”

“We gotta clean up the mess Don left behind. Hence why that intel would be really useful before we decide what to do with him.”

“Okay,” I sigh. “I’ll speak to her.”

North cuts the call and I stare at the file in my lap. Who is this girl? What sort of trouble has she got herself involved in? And, more importantly, how will it affect my brothers and our club?

I quickly close the folder and place it in the nearby desk drawer. My thoughts are scattered, and I can’t concentrate with the sudden news. I lean back on the couch and take a deep breath. Candy is going to stay with us. The thought sends shivers down my spine. I’ve only known her for a short while, but she’s already gotten under my skin. There’s something about her that’s intriguing, mysterious, and clearly dangerous.

I try to shake the thoughts away and focus on the matter at hand. I need to speak to Candy and find out more about her situation. And maybe, just maybe, I might get some answers to the questions that have been plaguing me since I met her.

As I wait for her arrival, my thoughts drift to her friend. A fit virgin who’s applied for membership at ‘For Me’. It’s notan uncommon occurrence, but the fact that this one is Candy’s friend piques my interest. I grab my laptop and bring it out of rest mode, then bring up the latest membership requests for the club. It’s easy enough to sort them by set parameters, so I filter out the males and then order the remaining applications by experience level. Interestingly, there are only three ‘little to no experience’ applications this time around.

I hear the sound of an engine outside and I know that Candy has arrived. I close the laptop and stand up, ready to face whatever comes next. As I walk towards the door, I take one last deep breath, trying to calm my nerves and steel myself for what’s to come.

Candy walks in with Don, her head low and her shoulders slumped. She looks up when she sees me and smiles weakly. I can see the fear in her eyes and it makes my heart ache.
