“Me good hider.”A faint image of the close protection of rock wrapping overhead came to me.

“Okay. You stay there until I tell you it’s safe.”

An answering wave of affection washed through my mind.

Raxnor scowled at the crack I’d made, and I moved my hand back into position to close it as much as possible. “She’s already hidden.”

“Are you certain? You’re right about her fur color—she could get us caught.”

“I’m certain. She found a little cave.”

“Then come closer. I want complete overlap of the fabric.”

I hesitated. He sat cross-legged on the ground, and I sat cross-legged on top of him, my butt perched on his calves. To get closer…

“Hurry! Wrap your legs around me. They’re almost here.”

I responded to his urgent tone and pushed my feet to either side of him, then scooted forward. My butt hung over the open air in the middle of his crossed legs, and I had no choice but to hook my heels behind his back and hold on to keep myself upright.

My thighs rested on top of his, giving me some extra height. It still only put me level with his neck, but that neck was bare, the blue of his skin calling to me. What would it feel like? Taste like?

His tail coiled up my back until the end vibrated against my shoulder blade. Why did it keep doing that? What did it mean?

The hum of an engine came from behind me, and Raxnor’s tail stopped buzzing and yanked me forward.

We were pressed close, chest to chest, the solid firmness of him teasing my nipples. I’d spent a good part of yesterday plastered to his back.

This feltnothinglike that. This feltwaymore intimate.

My heart leaped from a mixture of fear and attraction, the blood singing through my veins. I hadn’t felt this alive in years.

“Don’t move.” His voice rumbled from his chest, even when he tried to whisper, and the hot puff of his breath brushed over my ear.

I shivered, my thighs tightening around him instinctively.

The engine noise got louder and louder. Mierda! It sounded like it was about to land on top of us!

I began to pant as anxiety dragged icy fingers down my spine.

My arms burned from holding the fabric overhead.

“Easy now,” he whispered as his tail stroked up and down my back in a slow motion. “They’re not as close as they sound or we’d feel the downdraft against the fabric.”

“Oh!” I gasped. I hadn’t realized that. The logic of it stilled my racing thoughts and let me get my breathing more under control.

The noise faded a bit, and I sagged with relief because my arms were beginning to tremble. “Oh, good. I don’t know how much longer I could hold my arms up.”

“I can—” His mouth snapped shut with a click, and he cocked his head, listening.

It took me a few seconds, but then I noticed the engine noise getting louder again.

“They’re coming in for another pass. Hurry. Pass me the edges of your cloak, and I’ll hold both of them up.”

“Friend okay?”Lila called out.

“I’m okay. You stay hid. The bad lizards are coming back.”

A fierce flash of anger brushed my mind.“No hurt friend. Me fight.”
