But he’d been hiding things from me this whole time. Big things!

Dios mío, we’re married!

“Friend okay?”Lila pressed against my calf so hard I had to shuffle my feet to keep my balance. Her usually confident voice held a note of uncertainty and concern that ate at my heart.

I squatted and wrapped an arm around her, burying my fingers in her soft purple fur. “Thank you, niña. I’ll be okay.”

Hopefully.

“We need to go.” Raxnor’s voice took on a harsh note.

I nodded without looking at him and stood. Tark had disappeared, probably inside, so I hurried into the shuttle’s airlock, Lila at my heels.

The small plain room was functional but clean. When Raxnor stepped inside and the outer hatch closed, we were trapped so close together I could feel his presence like a pressure across the entire right side of my body.

A funny feeling tingled in my chest. Some traitorous part of me still longed to sway toward him, to let his strength surround me as it had for the past two days.

Two days of lies.

My heart hurt, and tears pricked my eyes. Mierda! Why did I always have to feel everything so intensely! I liked him! It was easy to imagine something more growing between us, but what if he’d hidden this from me because he didn’t want to be married to me?

The inner hatch slid open, and I bolted into the shuttle’s main cabin. The pale-blue walls were pretty, but their bare bones appearance didn’t hide the fact that this was a working ship, not a luxury yacht.

“Raxnor!” Tark called from an open doorway at the front that led to the cockpit.

“In a minute,” Raxnor said. A chair popped out when he tapped an outline on the wall. He waved me into it and showed me the straps. Then he scowled down at Lila. “The kreecat can go in a cabinet, or you can hold her on your lap, and I’ll strap you in together.”

“No boxes!”A flash of fear crossed my mind, and I wanted to go back and punch all the lizards in their toothy snouts for scaring her like that.

“I’ll hold her.” I took a seat and patted my thighs.

She leaped up and settled on my legs, and he wrapped the straps around us.

Lingering, he checked them an extra time, his mouth opening as if he wanted to say something.

The engine thrummed to life, vibrating through the cabin.

With a grunt, he turned and headed to the cockpit, allowing me to finally drop my brave face.

I folded over my pet and hugged her to me. Lila began to purr, the soothing sound soon joined by a feeling of simple contentment in my mind.

This is what I need with Raxnor. Dude needs to get telepathic like yesterday. Maybe then we’d communicate well.

Nah. I could picture it now. His brain probably had a stone wall around it—a scowling one. I snorted at the silly picture in my head, but it was a temporary reprieve from my hurt.

Lila purred louder, and I gave her another hug. Thank god I had her.

She’dnever lie to me.

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Raxnor

“What the frek did you do?” I growled at Tark, keeping my voice low as I strapped into the copilot’s seat.

“Me? How is any of this my fault?” He slapped at the control panel, and the shuttle lifted from the ground. “I had no idea you hadn’t told her! Frek, you didn’t even tellmeshe was your fated mate when we talked last night!”

“I—” Frek. How to explain? I pinched at the bridge of my nose, trying to stave off the headache threatening. “I didn’t want to force her into anything before she met all the other males on theDaredevil.”
