CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN

Sofie

A horrified look crossed Raxnor’s face.

“Bad lizards!”Lila screamed in my mind.

I whirled around.

A red bolt of light halted two feet in front of my chest as Glitter flickered into view for a moment.

A black blur flew across the floor with a furious yowl. Lila planted her front feet and pivoted her hips. The end of her tail soared through the air to plunge into the leg of the lizard who’d tried to shoot me.

He let out a gargled grunt and dropped his blaster. His entire body listed sideways as that knee gave out, and only the doorframe kept him from hitting the floor.

Lila danced out of the way.

Another Tula waited behind the first.

Two streaks of red shot past me to strike the new lizard’s chest. The milky inner membrane of her eyes snapped shut, and she toppled backward out of view.

Showing yet more Tula waiting

Mierda!

Raxnor shouldered me aside. “Get behind the equipment!”

“Sorry!” I’d been standing out in the open, gaping like a dummy. Fightingsowasn’t my thing.

I scrabbled backward, getting out of his way. Only there wasn’t any equipment to duck behind in this part of the room. The bulk of each 3D printer was built into the ceiling, with only the arms hanging down.

I crouched behind the closest mess of arms. The printers continued to work, oblivious to the fact that a firefight took place only a few feet away.

Raxnor kept up a continuous barrage of shots, walking forward. He barked out, “Sul! Main door.”

“Already on it!” the big male shouted, his tone strangely gleeful. “They’re coming through here too!”

Who the hell sounded happy during a fight?

“Kirel, back up Sul. Tark on me!”

An alarm began to wail, and Raxnor spat, “Frek! That’s done it!”

Lila yowled and ran over to me.“No like loud noise!”

I pressed her to the outside of my thigh, trying to protect her as much as possible. Why had I brought her into danger? It was so stupid!

“No! You friend! Me help!”

“And you did, niña.” I bit back a sob, afraid I wouldn’t be able to return the favor. I couldn’t even help myself.

Oh, god! What’s going to happen when the lizards get their paws on me again?

The image of the bare room I’d been locked in, dark except for the tiny window high on the wall, filled my mind. My heart rabbitted, battering at my ribs like a small animal desperate to escape. I fought to breathe.

Little horns poked me—hard.
