My heart skipped, and I swallowed hard. “Really?”

“I couldn’t imagine loving you more, and yet I do. Every day.”

Joy bubbled through my veins until I laughed, giddy with it.He really does love me. It’s not just some biological thing. There’s respect and care and—

“I love you, my soul’s breath.”

Love. So much love!

CHAPTERFOURTY

Raxnor

“I love you, too!” Zo-Fee threw her arms around my neck, her beautiful face beaming up at me as she rose on tiptoe. “I want to mate bond with you, Raxnor. I chooseyou.”

Her words reverberated through me, cracking open my heart until joy poured out, flooding my entire being.

My most special Zo-Fee choseme. I was no longer alone, no longer unwanted. I could finally see what she’d said to me before—her choosing me without the compulsion of a rulaa or kron meant she truly wanted me.

She loves me!

Everything else in the universe faded away as she grabbed a horn to pull me down to meet her. Our foreheads touched, and my rulaa tingled with the delight of her presence even in a roomful of others. My kron buzzed like mad where I’d wrapped my tail around my waist, and I thanked the Goddess for my spacesuit because otherwise it would have reached for her to start the mating heat in front of everyone.

Because this time, I wouldn’t have been able to stop it. The mating pull had me.

Pain flared white in my thigh as I pulled her to me. I ignored it. Nothing mattered but claiming my soul’s breath.

Her hot, sweet mouth opened under mine, and I licked into it, losing myself in her taste.

“Uh, Raxnor?”

I growled and squeezed Zo-Fee tighter.

“Raxnor! Your mate isn’t safe yet!”

Tark’s words splashed ice water across my senses, sending me reeling back into an awareness of our surroundings. I tore my mouth from Zo-Fee’s to find all of the Tula staring at us.

A growl rumbled through my chest, and I bared my fangs. The frekkers wouldn’t get near her!

“Come on.” Tark’s hand touched my shoulder. “We need grumpy, bossy Raxnor right now, not mating-obsessed Raxnor.”

I glared at him. “Bossy?”

“Frek yeah!” He laughed. “Though it’s good to see you cut loose and feel, this isn’t the place.”

“He’s right,” Zo-Fee said, her small hands pushing against my chest until I let her slide down to standing. “I shouldn’t have started this here.”

I crushed her to me again. “Never apologize for enjoying what we have.”

“Oh, I won’t.” She smiled up at me, then glanced around the room. “But I also want to get out of this place.”

“That can be arranged,” Senator Bila said from far too close. “If you’re done with your courtship display, that is.” Her cool voice held a note of derision.

Lila let out the growl I wished I could make and stepped up beside Zo-Fee. The kreecat’s tail swished, her stinger out, and she stared at the senator with pure hate in her eyes.

I bared my fangs at the senator. What I shared with Zo-Fee was too beautiful to be besmirched. “Don’t make me regret offering to be allies.”

“Then perhaps you should act like one. I need to meet with your captain.”
