Wrin sucked in a breath. “Are you certain?”

“Yes,” I lied. Oh, I was certain I wanted to save his life. Jumping right into an alien marriage? That I was a little shakier on. But the former consideration outweighed the latter. Wrin wouldnotdie because he’d rescued me. I wouldn’t allow it.

“That’s going to take at least twelve hours,” his mother said.

“At least,” he echoed.

My thighs clenched. Twelve hours? Holy shit, what kind of stamina did Wrin have? And also, eww. It was a little too freaky that his mother knew about it.

“Go. Do it.” She pulled out her comp and started tapping. “I’ll do everything I can to buy you the time.”

Yep! Wrin’s mother telling us to get our sex on was definitely freaky! Zaarn must not be as uptight about all this stuff.

Wrin took out his comp and tapped at the screen. “I’m telling my team to head back to Breyva.”

“Those Sjisji racers,” his mother said. It wasn’t a question.

His lips twisted in a wry smile. “You knew?”

“Where do you think you got your political acumen from? Yes, your father contributed to your intelligence, but he’s not good at devious, like we are.” She grinned, fangs flashing, her eyes snapping with pride. Then she shooed us away. “Now go. Make it so I don’t have to lie about the mate bond.”

Wrin pulled a blanket from the back of the flyer and held out his hand. “Shall we?”

I placed mine in his, and he tugged me toward the valoree grove.

“Why are we doing this outside?” I whispered.

He leaned over, his voice a quiet rumble laced with amusement. “Do you really want to have sex for the first time in the same house as my mother?”

“Good point.”

“What about me?”Max said. He’d been quiet all this time, eyeing the senator and listening to everything via our connection.

“You stay here,”I said.“Keep an eye out for strangers.”

Just because the senator was going to do everything in her power didn’t mean my captors were going to play along. They’d already been willing to set up and run an illegal facility. Who knew what else they’d do?

“Me watch good.”He disappeared into the undergrowth, a silent shadow.

“I know you will.”

The last of daylight had faded as we’d talked, and the trees ahead beckoned with their silvery purple glow.

The birds cheeped sleepily overhead, settling in for the night, and a gentle wind carried the sweet smell of the flowers. The crunch of pine needles softened under our feet as a layer of petals added extra cushioning.

He led me to the center of the grove, where a ring of trees circled a small open area. Silvery light painted the scene with an unreal beauty. I’d never been one for flights of fancy, but this place was downright magical.

Wrin spread the blanket on the ground and straightened, turning toward me. “I will now give you my sacred mating vow.”

I nodded.

“My soul’s breath, will you mate me?” His eyes held a note of vulnerability that made my heart ache. “Will you join your soul to mine until we are one?”

“I will.” I poured conviction into my voice. I might have doubts, but we were doing this, and I refused to trivialize it.

“You will be mine, and I will be yours.”

I liked that. It felt nicely balanced between the two partners. If these were like wedding vows, I wanted to be an active participant. “You will be mine. I will be yours.”
